as above, lately when i run the engine i can hear a grumble/whine/whirrng kind of noise coming from around the dynamo.
it does not sound mechanical like metal on metal (could be wrong).

what could this be??

bearings?
brushes?
what else?

it is not constant but more noticable after you blip the throttle (by hand obviously  )
i have to make a 200 mile round trip very soon and worried it might go bang!! :|
is it likely to go bang and fubar the engine?is it driveable??

regards.

Do a web search on 'John Muir engine noises'. I think ratwell has a page. There is also a flow chart that can take you through a fault finding process. Funny what you find on the web sometimes, and I was looking for info on carbs at the time.....

My alternator bearings were grumbling for a while before I changed them. For a quick test you can take the fan belt off and then blip the throttle. If the noise isn't there you've probably found the culprit. Be quick though! Obviously no cooling whilst the belt is off.

If they are in need of replacement talk to peter good at volksgoods. Very knowledgeable and can supply the bearings at reasonable prices.

We do a kit:

the only other things you may need are:

Fuel Pump:

and rod:

You can always replace the bearings and brushes in your dynamo but I would use it as an excuse to upgrade.
