Bit of a strange question but how good should I expect my hand brake to be?!

It's fine on the level and moderate hill

Bit steep at Bakewell a fortnight ago and it wanted to roll...

Happy to get them adjusted and/or cables replaced if it will give a decent result, but are they generally a bit 'iffy' anyway?!

Check the rear brake shoes, adjustment and cables. There's no reason for an in-efficient handbrake.
That's just another myth that ill-maintained vans give, along with steering wander, oily engines, poor heating and unreliability.

Agreed as well...
Mine was pull as far as you dare and pray, but just adjusted everything last weekend and the van stops better and its half the amount to hold it fully now.
Worth the half hour of grovelling under the back wheels for sure!
