Right, I work for the council, and in the past 3 years iv been on one standard health and safety course, a manual handling course, a working at heights course, electrical safety testing course, and had numerous online courses and surveys emailed to me.
Im currently doing an I.T (where to position yourself so that you are hugely uncomfortable but cant sue the council if your back snaps) course online.

Just to put this into perspective, i work in a public facing role in a museum... the technicians so all the lifting and climbing ladders. 99% of basic health and safety is common sense. and i very rarely get chance to use the computers...

and the councils want to know where they can cut spending?

i could give one or two suggestions.

funny you raise this I've just done my "15" whole minutes of wasted time, time I cant get back, on a online compulsory H&S course on the use of my works computer for this year......

You want to think yourself lucky you dont work on the rails its getting a bit stupid of late, you cant wipe your arse without some **** telling you to use paper and not your bare fecking hand..... how many ******* courses do you need? then you go to the other extreme of my project managers ignoring basic H&S because it slows work down...

I have to admit that common sense should prevail but then only a few days ago some tit of a labourer nearly took out a load of tourists at green pk station on one of my jobs with a large drum of cable the fecking halfwit, common sense cant be taught sadly and its dullards like this that force the hand of these companies and public bodies, recruiting former SS oficers to enforce it though is a bit OTT.....

Have you had any accidents in the last 3 years?

I think that most H&S courses are for people who are improperly trained or are lacking in common sense - a whole industry has grown up to support it and (like environmentalists  ) they'll make sure it's here to stay!

;)

If you don't do a course, and develop RSI, then you sue them, that will cost plenty ...

One you've been trained and complete a DSE assessment then it's in your hands. Blame a compensation culture if anyone.

H and S is much maligned, and usually badly communicated.

How very true! Sadly no one is allowed to think for themselves, we are just bombarded with rediculous rules and forced to take over the top stupid steps to avoid an 'accident'. Not allowed to turn to the side when on a step ladder etc.,does my head in. Been using them for 30 plus years and not fallen off yet because I am not the brainless tw*t they presume everyone to be.
I love the Cal -look VW scene and the like we have imported but despise the 'sue you' compensation culture that we also have to endure.

Am heading for a new series of 'grumpy old men' with just me doing the biz!!! Could do the whole series myself when no -one looking

ah, the memories, i had a *** hanging out of my mouth the whole time i was draining the petrol tank in my van...

before i get shouted at it was december, and the flash point of petrol is a little higher than a bit of ash falling in it. i tried to explain this to my cousin who was helping by throwing a lit match into a little tub of petrol, and as expected it went out in the liquid. ah the joys of physics.

Glad it's not just me. My missus says I'm turning into my old man.
F*cking hope not.....

:( common sense-you could,nt sell it--those that have got it-wont buy it -those that have not got it -dont think they need it -- with regards to health & safety, i was reminded by a co -worker. he was taught on a h/s course to wash his hands after using the toilets, i told him in the army i was taught not too piss on my fingers

its the vapour that ignites, if its cold enough theres not enough vapour/oxygen to combust.

An idiot spilt 250ml of a toulene type solvent in a clean room in a previous workplace. They had to evacuate the whole building shut all electrics off and call the 'hazmat' guys from the Fire Brigade. There were several guys in the building trained in breathing apparatus as well. We were out for half a day. At the time i thought it was madness but was subsequently told that they had an explosion in one of their Asian factories where even less of this stuff was split.

nice,

yeah, i forgot to mention my drive was a wind tunnel, so even on a still day it was hard enough to light a *** that once it was lit you kept it going.

i did explain the vapours bit too, science was my best subject at school... because i used it as an excuse to blow things up... my friend is the reason they dont keep caesium in schools anymore, well him and the recently refurbished school pool.

I'm and HGV mechanic for the local council and the of ******** courses I get sent on are stupid!

Thales, Connect radio, network wide just got a couple or three weeks at green park at the mo then onto Paddington for a few weeks then I believe I'm back to Green park for a few more weeks.....

Am currently watching 'A farmers life for me' on BBC2. The contestants are doing their bit on open farmland in Suffolk. When they get to use the tiny little baby tractor to do a bit of ploughing, they are having to wear a hard hat. A hart hat, to protect them from what exactly? Otherwise wearing jeans, t-shirt and trainers. It's Suffolk, no overhead mountains with boulder likely to fall, nothing being flung around at a huge rate of knots and more likely to get a bit of mud thrown up in their eyes than suffer a rockfall but they wear a hard hat not safety glasses.
The safety officer needs sacking for enforcing moronic rules and not addressing the genuine possibilities.
Were I on the show, I would have walked rather than meekly worn a hard hat in that situation. Absolute bo**ocks.
