So I've been looking around for a while now at work benches for the garage - but all the ones I like are too much cash (have been dreaming about Duragarage systems  http://www.duragarages.com/ 8) ) - so today decided to crack on and build my own workbench!

I'm no handy andy when it comes to this sort of stuff so am quite pleased with the results - I bought:

3 x 16ft long 2 x 4 sawn timber
3 x 16ft long 2 x 6 sawn timber
100 3'' wood screws

I had to cut the timber up in the builders yard to get it in the car - but apart from that only took 20 mins to get the bits - the above and a drill with a cross head and wood drill bit and I was sorted :) - took 4 hours start to finish with distractions in between!

Used this site for inspiration http://www.handymanusa.com/articles/workbench.html - here's the result:

All in cost me £67.90 for a 6 foot work bench - bargain :)

Awesome Double man points fo building your own bench. Id love one but as ive only got 450mm to play with at the back of my garage I might be pushing it.

So whats the first "bench build"?

looks good to me dude, looks very heavy and solid, i build mine out of some 2x2 and a B&Q worktop, does the job, but not as sturdy as yours.

cheers! - it is heavyweight, so much so that I struggled to move it after building it in the middle of the garage (doh!) - the place I got the timber from is trade but does cash accounts so a "real mans" place - nearly bricked it when he bought 16ft lumps of wood out - didn't know it was going to be that solid but didn't want to show myself up by asking for smaller bits

no bench built stuff yet - still sitting at the laptop on piccie 4 - though I can now claim on fleabay that my stuff is "bench tested" ;)

Wheres the vice?
It needs a vice this will round off your creation to be a perfect piece of garage furniture :D
Then maybe a beer fridge, radio and armchair.

Nice work dude.

I think my missus is getting fed up of me taking Vdib things apart on the dining table, I really need a good workshop, getting so fed up working under a car port in all weathers.

Yeah you need a vice, every work bench needs a vice, saying that i havent got one :( i have got a 6" grinder though :)

Hope you don't mind but i'll pinch that idea, I am in the process of building my own bench.

Oh and I have a vice, the macdaddy of vices. My Grandad gave it to me and it's bloody heavy no need to bolt it down the sheer weight of the thing is enough.

Do hookers & crack count as a vice?

I now feel that I need some sort of workbench adornment - though I did fancy a compressor next with some airlines plumbed in - decisions on what to save for !

Mine is breezeblocks and a door...

But at least I have a vice...
