personally if i was staying at the house for a good few years id pop the roof off and stick another course or two of bricks. that way no probs getting the bus in and out and you could work on it during the winter or rain!
i know the asbestos could be a prob but you may end up cracking it anyway. much better to dispose of it and stick a marine ply and felt roof up.

Hopefully I'm stating the obvious, but asbestos removal is not for ameteurs.
Get the pros in a get rid of it.
Then go up at least 2 more layers of bricks.

What Chris said really. Raise the roof buy adding a few coarses of blocks, then junk the roof for a modern one. The asbestos will drip yellow crap on your van anyway, it looks damp in there anyway.

You could have it done in a week end.

Speak to your local dump as one round here you can take 6 sheets as long as it is sealed & double bagged in red asbestos sacks.

It is not that dangerous to remove it as it is the lowest grade. If you wet it down with the hose, wear overalls & a dust mask you will be ok.

I took my old garage down myself that was asbestos roof & walls, I took it down in 2 hours with just a claw hammer!

I got a dodgy skip mant to take it away, We put it in the bottom & covered it with rubble.

Asbestos is only dangerouge if the dust is breathed in over a long period of time. The dump just burry it deeper than household waste.

The other option is to pull the whole thing down & build it a bit bugger all round. Not the cheapest though...

A mate with a 76 Viking pop top couldn't get his van in the garage, his solution is to take the front off the garage each year to store his bus away and then park it outside in the summer

i wouldn't worry about the asbestos if you remove it, wet it down and use a hacksaw blade and carfully cut the fixings off and remove in whole sheets don't snap it to much, thats when you get the dust oh and wear a mask and overalls.

Some tips do take the asbestos, but if not there are people who will come and take it away (shop around as could be pricey) I have had it done and it cost around £3500  but it was round a massive boiler and needed special tunnels etc  it was like ET!!!

Take the roof off dude raise it up 2 courses and put a new roof back on, wont cost much to put on a new roof atall. 8)

I had my very leaky pop top removed and had an original tin top grafted in with a new headliner. It looks great and cost about the same as having a sunroof fitted and trimmed.
Much better in my opinion.

That was very cheap if it was done properly.

We know someone at the moment doing a roof swap (http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=336042) and he has had to drill out all the spot welds in the gutters on both roofs! Thats some fair amount of time, drill bits and spot welds!
I'm sure there would be people out there that would gladly take your money to butcher the roof off by cutting and between the windows

I didn't have the entire roof replaced, just a section cut out of a donor vehicle. A flange was welded around the edge of the hole and the replacement section was supported by this and welded in very carefully to avoid distortion. It did need a bit of a scim to tidy it up but really nothing major. A year on you still can't tell it's had a panel grafted in (hope it stays that way).
Still chuffed with it.
