How do I tighten the fan belt on Type 4 engine?

I've loosened the allen bolt but can't seem to get the alternator to move to the right. Have I missed something?

get under the bus,,,look up to alternator & you will see the slide that has a nut & bolt, loosen a bit to adjust

Am I right in thinking that the alternator is hinged somewhere towards the bottom (near where the dipstick enters the casing at 7/8 o'clock ish) and retained diagonally opposite by the allen bolt?

Yes,the alternator does hinge at the 7/8 o'clock position.On the front at this position you should see the end of the bolt,it's a round head which locates in a slot to hold it still.Anyway the actual nut you need to loosen is at the other end of that bolt.It is tricky to see,you'll need a light and a 13mm spanner to loosen it off.You can just get to it enough to undo it.
