Hi,

Seen this on Vzi. Anybody know if this is correct for a 68 bay?

bus_ignition.jpg

Part no. is 211 905 887c - though I don't know if that's the part number for the barrel or the switch or what :?:

I checked the ignition section on the VW Heritage website but couldn't see any similar part numbers :?

Thank you,

Mike

Just found this in the thread 'early bay differences':

As for the ignition switch itself, 68-69 were different than the 70-71's. On the 68-69's you inserted the key in a vertical position, started your bus and it went back to the vertical position. For the 70-71's you inserted your key in a horizontal position, turned your bus over and it returned to the horizontal position.

Mike.

only numbers i can come up with are

complete assembly

211 905 855c

and switch only upto chassis number 210 230 0000

310 905 865A

after that use 111 905 865F

Thanks Jon.

If possible could any 68 bus owners on here compare the style of their switch with that shown in the following picture?

Thank you,

Thats the early style as you know, and the first pic can now be clearly seen as a later type like mine. So all you have to determine is if any of it is interchangable

On the samba people are saying there is no external steering lock up to 70, which if true suggests this is a later type. It does in fact look identical to my '71 barrel - see pics in my thread http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?t=10062.

Steering lock?

Presumably you don't mean a steering lock mechanism like more modern cars have? (i.e stops the steering wheel turning when no key in the ignition?)

:)

Thats exactly what i meant mine has it as does the pic at the top, mines a '71

Hmm.

As far as I know, the my '71 doesn't have a steering lock.

Should it?

:)

Hiya Tofu,

Starting in the 1970 production year with the introduction of the 887A ignition housing, Type IIs had integral steering locks. Of course, that means your 71 (if original) should have a steering lock. But cy is correct in that while your ignition lock housing should have a steering lock it may well not be functioning.

A po drilled out the original switch/barrel leaving a mahoosive hole in the housing and an aftermarket ignition in the dash.

So I need a replacement housing and ignition switch/barrel .
