Want to remove my ign barrel to see if i can repair it,as someone had disconnected it in the past and has put an ign switch in the middle of the dash board.

Mr Haynes says
1. undo the screws holding it in,
2. undo steering col screws
3. remove grub screw

Can do 2 and 3, am i being a real dumb ass cos i cant see any screws holding it in, it wont move.

I sprayed Plugas into mine and worked again, worth a try. ;)

Hiya rusty,

You are up against it, my friend.

VW kept the changes they made (almost on a yearly basis) to the ignition barrel a closely guarded secret. Security concerns, you know. There is almost no VW authorized documentation about ignition barrel servicing available, even at this date. You can try Special Patrol (the website listed above) for some general pointers.

Here is one helpful hint from somebody who had to figure out how to remove the ignition barrel from his 70 Bus. That your ignition barrel does not want to come out PROBABLY indicates that it is being held in place by the keyway (where you stick the key). The keyway can be removed and from there the ignition barrel should just slip out to the rear.

To get the keyway out, take a look at Special Patrol. You'll notice that it's recommended that you cut a length of coat hanger and then use that to depress a spring via a hole in the ignition barrel casing. You'll need to find such a hole on your 72 ignition barrel casing. A hint: it will likely be located about a half inch in from the end of the ignition barrel housing that holds the keyway. Press your coat hanger trip wire in until you feel resistance and then, with a bit more pushing, a slight give. That's the leaf spring (that holds the keyway in position) bending to a free position. When you feel that "give" you need to hook a dental pick into your keyway and give it a tug. This may take a little practice and getting used to the feel of the spring, but once you hit the "sweet spot" that keyway should come right out.

Wires are cut at the barrel. Thought i would have a go to see if i could do it looks too

That's just the switch, that can be removed by removing the tiny grub screw (red paint)
and the two screws holding the whole assembly, that'll give you enough room to wiggle it out.

Can you turn the key?

On mine the switch was broken so a dash button was wired instead by the PO, through lack of use the lock dried up.
I just replaced the switch and lubed the lock.

There are grub screws under/behind the screws, can't remember if they need to come out too...

You might be lucky - if the switch broke up and PO bodged it, the lock might still be OK ;)

I should point out I replaced my switch with the cowl and column in situ, you might need
to visit a chiropractor afterwards but it is possible. ;)

Got the ign switch out but couldnt get barrel screw undone, not easy when on your back, upside down, arms at right angles, head reasting on the brake pedel and body in the walthrough bit
Will have to remove cowel to get it out. Children moaning they wanted to go out, so had to put back together again.

But i will remove it soon.

Leave the lock in, try a new switch before removing it.
