If I get an American citizen to send me parts as a gift do I have to pay tax of any kind . I think not  :)
but was wondering if anyone has done this .
Cheers

Probably yes, as they rarely take 'gift' on the package as the truth. If its fedex they will probably open and inspect it then assess if it looks new etc. put a value on it in worst case scenario and you pay import duty and VAT on their value. If it comes USPS you'll most likely get it through with out any charges.

An example. i had a brand new set of ping golf clubs sent over, got my cousin to take them out for a round of golf to get some mud and scratches on them, i still had to pay £160 duty and VAT
