69 bus. when indicating, as you know you get both green arrows flasing on your dash, to tell you one of your indicators is on.........only mine sometimes stop flashing, if I turn them off then on again, I'll get a few flashes on the dash then they go out again :? It happens regardless of left or right, and dosn't affect the operation of the indicators on the outside of the bus - just the green dash arrows!!
any ideas?

check the bulb holders are earthing on the back of the clock pod , had this problem on some other lights in the clock pod , so i replaced all the bulbs and bent the earth conections up a little to make a better contact .

Hiya Doris,

What you are describing is a very typical symptom of the flasher relay going south. If you have an original flasher relay you'll need to check to see if it's a 4 pin or a 9 pin. VW changed from 9-pin to 4-pin during the 69 production year. The 4-pin can be replaced with aftermarket relays. I prefer to use the original and have stockpiled a few. The 9-pin was a NLA part for quite a while. However it is now being offered by Wolfsburg West and a couple of other online parts houses.

69 Ithought that was the 4 pin pull it and see... theres only two relays to choose from the 9pin is fffing obvious without pulling

I'm sure the 68 was a 9 pin but 69 build should fall into the later on the main, that said theres suprises abound in this game....

snap his hand off for a spare if hes selling that is....

but its deffo a insulation/dielectric breakdown so the weakest link being the switch you cant go wrong with a new relay...

Hiya Doris,

If I were a betting man, and I've been known to take a wager or two, I'd bet that your '69 is running a 4-pin flasher.

Why? Your symptoms are typical of the 4-pin flasher. And the end of January marks the middle of the production year for VW. I'd think the change to a 4-pin would have happened by then (or they would have elected to postpone it until the new model year for 1970).

Hiya Doris,

Hah! Actually I was going to post up a picture of the relay the last time I was here but my computer went beserko. I was lucky to get that last post up at all.

In any event, here is a picture of the OEM 4-pin relay (211 953 215C) used in both bus and bugs...........

Thanks Mike, I found it under the dash,If it seems to be pretty symptomatic of the flasher relay I'll replace it......
now - where to get one?????? I've added it to my wish list to start with!!
p.s. could a faulty relay be causing my generator light to be lit or is that a differnt ball game all together - what do you reckon chaps?

Doris,

you can do away with this four pin unit and use a 3 pin flasher unit which are readily available at most motor factors or auto electricians or i can get you one if need be.Just make sure you have terminals 39, 49a and + (or sometimes stamped 49+)

as for wiring,

39 = Brown

49a = This is where you have to do a little mod, you fit the Blue wire with the black/white/green in the same crimp and the Blue with a red trace together (kbl---this is your warning light wire)

+/49+ = Thick white

and thats it, you will then have working indicators and warning light with a common easy to get relay.
