Hey guys,

I've just been on the phone to Cherished and RH to insure my bus, but had no joy.

It's not registered yet as I'm finalising the restoration, I've lived here for four years and don't have a another car as I use my feet, bike and trains to get around, no need to drive around in Sheffield.

Cherished doesn't want to insure me as the bus isn't a second vehicle...

RH their representative was a bit snooty and from the get go didn't seem to want to insure me quoting the lack of driving experience as a reason why they would not want to insure me.
I've been driving for 19 years all over Europe, the States, Australia and New Zealand. Here I've been driving since I moved here in 2010 (works cars and hire cars for work up and down the country from Invergordon down to Truro, my partners parent's car and motorhome)

Thought these were good insurers, but guess not for me.

Called JK and their final verdict after another half hour phone call was £369! Comprehensive cover with European breakdown cover but no agreed value it goes off current market value. What is current market value for insurance purposes now?

What's going on??

Any recommendations??

Thanks

Andy

That's strange I am with jK and have agreed value, I wouldn't touch a market value policy

The rep said Agreed Value was not possible on this policy.
I called back and they go through 200 insurance companies to find the best deal, what a deal that was

YOu might be on a policy with another company through JK...

MIght go through my current US insurance (theft and fire only at the moment) as I can switch to other countries without fees and the cancellation fees for insurance companies here are probs extortionate...

Does the DVLA require a UK insurance company certificate to register a vehicle or could it be a US company for UK coverage?

Cheers

A

Have mine with RH until I can get another.... agreed value ? yes but even though it states the bus is kept on the drive it is not fully covered if not garaged.... also not insured between 10 pm and 6am, very iffy company in my experience. quoted like a star, wrongly listed things and had to send it back Four times and still not happy so casting around for a better One. Happy to pay the price but want all that I ask for ! have agreed value but not when it is out of the garage, how does that work ?

I'm with RH - you've got me a little worried now! Where in the policy wording does it say about 10PM-6AM? Or the agreed value only when in the garage bit? :)

I'll have another read of my policy docs when I get home. :)

Don't get me wrong, I am not about to defend the insurance industry (who I generally detest if I am honest), but look at it from their perspective:
- an unregistered import
- still under restoration so determinable value
- no other vehicle owned (so bus is likely on paper at least to be your daily driver once on the road)
- no recent verifiable driving history (insurance record).

From an insurers point of view you ain't got a lot going in your favour here, and in the circumstances that £369 fully comp including European breakdown might not be a bad offer.

Having said that, our mistake with insurance is trying to make sense of it. I have learned not to bother, the tw*ts get you whichever way they can. I had a hell of a job persuading Cherished that my wife, who is also on my policy, walks to work, hence we don't need a second car and the bus, and no, she will never, ever, ever, commute the half mile to work in the bus. :(

i've used carol nash before and were ok. now with peter james as better price. give them a go perhaps.

Yes trinity lane are who Jk and Adrian Flux and I'm sure many more use, I know because I phoned them about 3 days ago.
I also phone RH today and they stated I could only have agreed value if the vehicle was garaged oven night and a statement of value sent to them from a club or specialist, for that costs I may as well pay the extra £30
and stay with JK.

Have you tired Lancaster insurance, they provides the cheapest quote but I haven't picked through it yet and I need to wait till December to get that price as I will be 30 then.

Below are the quote I have received in the last 7days and my circumstance if this helps you gauge what getting quoted.

My bus
1970 Westy pop top import
Narrowed beam 3"
Dropped spindles
Air ride up front
Adjustable spring plates
1600 SP
1303s gearbox
Split screen wheels
Live in a village on the outskirts of Milton Keynes and the van is garaged.
I am a home owner and have a clean licence held for 12 years and never claimed or had any accidents.
Van was last agreed by JK at 15k

Jk £181. Agreed value.

RH £150 European breakdown, has to be garaged to get agreed value and validation has to be completed by a club or specialist who hasn't worked in my bus.

Lancaster £120
*note I haven't looked through the cover on the Lancaster policy.

Hope this helps

I'm with rh and if the bus is at my home address it has to be garaged between. 10pm and 6am to be covered for theft. Away from home is fine

Ahh, fair enough - I read what Trinketpimp posted as not being covered to drive between 10pm and 6am. If my van is at home, it's tucked up in the garage overnight so it's not a problem :)

Thank you all for the many replies!

I am on my partners parents policy at the moment, have been for four years driving their car and motorhome.
I am still paying insurance for theft and fire through my US insurance (comprehensive market value only) so stillhave the no-claims bonus there.

I gave Peter Best a call talked to a nice lady and she said she'll call me back today, still waiting...

I'll give the others noted above a call as well.

Maybe I'm just too truthful???

I'll let you know how I get on.

In the meantime, keep posting :)

Cheers

Andy

Hi Jon,

I should be able to, but think RH have made up their mind, it'll be all on my 'record' with them.
Not worth the hassle for me.

Thanks though!

Peter Best got me a quote with agreed value subject to agreement on six photos with 30days Euro cover for £217!

That's getting closer to the here stated premiums, however this is taking into account that this is my only vehicle, insured in an area declined by others.

Sweet!
