hello i have an oil leak  but its coming from the back of the engine in the center any ideas :?: when it gets hot it just poors out any advice would be great thanks :(

Have a look around the base of the dynamo / alternator pedastal. Mine leaked here and was dripping onto the pulley and then being thrown out and around the engine bay.
Also check the fuel pump base

so front of the engine... em thats sounding bad, sounds like the seals gone in a big way and I'm surprised you able to drive it if its that bad as the clutch will be sodden....

deffinately at the bell house coupling to engine?

it only leaks when the engines hot (motorway driving) did it last year. went on the motorway today same thing. i do 300 miles a week and its fine it just bugs me

Replacing the seal itself is a 5 minute job and the seal costs a fiver...

...unfortunately, you have to drop the engine to do this job.

I had this on my old Splitty, eventually it to the point where the clutch started slipping,so I had a new complete clutch fitted at the same time as having the seal done.If you find someone to do your seal ask them to check out the clutch it might not have much life left and it will save you money in the long run .

They are not too bad to do. I have done mine 6 times now. I think my engine has a bent crank so am not doing it any more!

On the plus side, I can do one in an hour & 35 mins!

wow thats fast. i did a 320 mile round trip sunday and used up 3 litres or oil i might have a go monday. if and one has any advice or know where i can find info to help that woukd be great ....or if anyone wants to help :?: thanks stewart

That is a major oil leak, I cant believe you arent having other problems as a result of it - slipping clutch, overheating etc

If its coming from where the gearbox and engine meet its deffo flywheel oil seal.

My tips are, don't buy a **** quality seal, remember the O ring inside the flywheel, and its also worth replacing your clutch thrust bearing whilst your there, and giving the friction plate a good check over for oil contamination and wear.

Sounds like it needs to be taken out & given a good going over - is it possible its the oil cooler leaking?
Just really surprised that 3 litres of oil could leak out through the flywheel oil seal & not result in clutch slipping???

Sounds about the same as my old bug before I changed the seal, however that problem developed and got worse over time.

The one in the SC properly shat itself and knackered the clutch but that was sudden and due to a crap quality seal.

Mine just leaks straight down, it doesn't get any on the clutch.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

I replaced the seal in my bug reasonably quickly....and inthe van it's easier as getting the engine out is less of a tight fit. :D .but as they are telling you, go for a quality seal, don't skimp :? , and have the clutch disc refaced( itcost me about 25 pounds in Spain a while ago!) it makes a great differnce, its cheaper than a whole new cltch, and now that you have your engine out do all these little jobs that you wouldn't do otherwise
