Cheers for that, I was concerned about the steering lock but it doesn't apply according to the article :)

Fantastic article. Now I know what my list of priorities is. Thank you so much for posting it should be made a sticky.

Rich.

So my new slamwerks narrow beam will fail for not having steering stops fitted, what a touch.

The ability to steer without the wheels being able to catch on the chassis/bodywork isn't unreasonable, surely? :?

The 4" narrowed beam on my bay has steering stops fitted to it...

In addition, I've seen a Beetle whose axle beam was so rotten the steering stop had fallen off...

(not the greatest photo...)

depends how you define a steering stop cos it used to be ok to have a ali plate for the tyre to rub against, thats cos some vintage cars are made like this,it was always a failier for tyres to rub against body!

be intresting to see how some of the mega narrow stuff gets through
although i do wonder if an mot tester see's enough busses to know the track is narrowed?

Vehicles with a track so narrow that the vehicle cannot be safely tested over an inspection pit or an approved four post ramp, the test may be conducted on a hard standing. However, if the vehicle is so low that the tester cannot safely jack the vehicle up, they are within their right to reject the vehicle for testing or fail it for not being able to complete the test.

depends if there a proper mechanic or a retrained shelf stacker
The place that attempted to track my bus would be clueless they needed the drag link explained when they tried to give it back with 1/2 turn to lock one direction and 2 and a bit the other way.

The MOT manual (available here in full: http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/publications/manualsandguides/vehicletestingmanualsandguides.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) specifically says that sort of steering stop IS allowed, so long as maintained in a condition unlikely to damage the tyres... :)

That was one the one thing which concerned me too, until I realised it was post 2001 only :D
