JK Devon PoP Top Roof Cap

Hi folks wondering if you could help us out. Would really like a fully restored roof but finances may dictate otherwise, I hence ask you feed back on the alternatives as water is now pissing in (with the roof shut) Mainly through leaky bellows and the roof vent I think.

Is this conversion any good ie does it stop the leaks

Can I see some close ups of a JK roof cap on a van?

How much do we increase the van height if we go with this option?

Can you change the bellows after the cap has been installed?

Can any one think of stop gap measure just for this summer (or so!) ?

Hi Nick,

I just got new bellows and a JK roof cap on my 71 Devon. It was leaking like a trooper before, if it rained and then I went out floods of water would shoosh (is that a word?) over me and any passenger when I braked and the out the back when I accellerated! :roll:

If you fit a roof cap then you need to change your bellows now as you can't take it off later - so I got both done at the same time. I got this all fitted for me but had a bit of a nightmare with it to be honest - won't be going there again.... However the bellows are nice - I can now see out the windows! Plus with this rain I have had nothing flooding in anymore...so far... :wink:

It cost an arm n a leg though - if you have a garage and a little knowledge I can't believe this job would be as hellish as I was told it was. I've read on other forums of people doing their own roof bellows and caps.

Oh yeah, it add's practically nothing to the height - a few centimetres - can't say I noticed it.

Got this pic - not close up but shows you what it looks like.

I can take a couple if you really want me to. Mines got the skylight thingy too.

Cheers Rache' nice lookin' ride! Prob is we dont have a garage..... but I do think I could do the install. Some more photos would be cool coz ideally I/we' like to go stock but what price being dry! Was yours a deluxe kit (ie the one with the uprated springs and does it now hold the roof up ok?). Our original springs can barely hold the original roof up, must be something to do with getting old!

Hi Nick,

I'll get some photo's done for ya at the weekend no probs.

I bought the kit with the springs yes - you will need these as otherwise it will never hold up the new roof. Now though works a treat - bit more weight to get the initial push up started but then the springs kick in and it really goes up no worries, it's much stronger than it was before.

As to any performance differences I would say it was the equivalent as having 25l of water in the back of the van...ie you really won't see (there aren't any) any changes.

I had mine rebuilt at individual interiors (now campershop.co.uk) and it is back top original spec. leak free and fantastic - trouble it is was 2 grand to rebuild it!

i was after the roof cap but saved up instead. i only need the 1 kidney after all

I didn't have that option sadly as they no longer fit the Devon roofs for people. Still cost me nearly 2 grand though.... :shock:

Hi Nick,

Did a couple of pics at the weekend which show the new roof I have now. I don't think it is ugly as some nice people have said on here

Anyway - hope it helps you out to make a decision. At the end of the day I did what was suggested by 2 Aircooled specialists.

ugly was probably a bit harsh, sorry, i can be a bit of a knobhead when it comes to OG'ness sorry.

If it serves the purpose it was designed for and keeps your bus dry thens its doing the job :wink:
