Would be good to keep it going, peeps would keep jobs to ,not a great lover of them but its a VW :D

It must have been a massive loss for the country as a whole. Serious injury and insurance problems are just a nuisance.

Not sure about the positioning of airbags but couldn't it be possible to fit ABS onto the Kombi? As far as I know, Transits and the like have ABS. Also, arn't commercials exempt (In the UK anyway) from having to have airbags?
Or is this just a case of no one wants it to be produced anymore?
Just seems to me like two very small excuses to stop production.

I heard they actually stopped production cos of the Olympics, they didnt want to be seen as producing an old car...

i think they stopped producing due safety i mean, how many people must have crashed these piles of ***** whilst driving with a bag on their heads.
kill it off like they did in the seventies.

They are ugly and ive seen 06 plates covered in rust, so IMO it wont help do our reputation or vw's rep any good whatsoever.

Maybe a bit off topic, but I watched "The Bus Movie" on Youtube last night that someone else posted up.

They say that the rear engine was inherently unsafe in head on crashes, as the weight of the engine/gearbox was behind driver, whilst with a front engined car the forward stopping forces of the engine are not transferred through the cabin, but direct into the wall, which I sort of understand. (the bus body will be prone to crumpling, whereas in a front engined vehicle everything behind the engine wouldn't crumple)

They go on to say this is somewhat mitigated by buses being so much higher, but I suppose that only helps if you hit a car. (and lift your feet up quick!)

Cheerful subject - sorry !

rather than pass a law that forcing abs and airbags to be fitted to all new vehicles they should be teaching people how to drive properly and have road sense! don't just make them safer for WHEN they crash, teach them how NOT to crash...

typical modern day thinking imo...
