Met a nice guy today with his crossover - he bought it from two Australian backpackers in 1985 for £200 (they needed the cash to get home!), since then he's done nearly 250,000 miles in it, it's on it's 3rd engine and fifth set of tyres!
He drives it every day, it's well loved, and looked surprisingly good in it's 'garage door enamel paint' rollered paint job!
He's also got 3 early Beetles (an oval, an early cabrio, and 1 other) which are his 'real' passion - he'll be at Beachbuggin' on sunday - hope to see some other great buses too!!!

;)

I remember a place in London around the mid 80s where the Australian back packers would go after touring ( around Bishopsgate, Shoreditch area) they would stay in their vans until they were sold and use the money to go home. There were always plenty of VW vans some had been well used so to speak, some were sold to other back packers and went back to do another tour of duty. I wonder if this guy bought his from one of these sellers? My brother in law bought a lovely 74 devon then for about £400. Sadly the council moved them on when developers took over and the last I heard was that they were situated in Camden, North London. Does anyone else remember or bought a van from these intrepid travellers?
