I know my massive heavy brick of a bus isn't going to do great mileage but it's getting silly, when the engine was first fitted I'd get 20 - 25 mpg running around and on a run keeping it around 60 I'd get nearly 30,now I'm getting 20 on a run where I never go above 55. I've done what I can and had the rest done by someone else, the timing, the carbs balanced, the tappets adjusted ( which we thought was it as they were closed at the back) but its still rotten. Is there anything else I can do (other than LPG) anything???!!!!

Cheers

The fact that it used to do better mpg would surely indicate something is now amiss and requires fixing rather than changing over to LPG?

Check your brakes are not binding or dragging. On a level safe surface push hard on the foot brake, release it and then check immediately whether the bus is free to roll by giving it a push.

Check you carb settings, check with a co meter if in doubt - you may have excessive fuel level in the float chambers for instance or the needle valves are not completely shutting off, fuel pump pressure too much for them, or a jet is loose in the carb etc. Cant really write you a whole workshop manual fault finding scheme but you get the idea I hope.

dito ,you carring more crap around ,roof rack ect?cos that will kill mpg.changed anything else?

Cheers, brakes just done all round for Mot, it's a west so has a roof rack but it had one before and the carbs were set up on a rolling road with the last twelve months, all that combined with a complete engine service have left me at a complete loss :(

could be the quality of the fuel nowadays it crap compared to what it used to be
i cant use supermarket fuel as its full of detergent my van will run crap and slugish
but fill up at shell and it runs fine put in the full fat optimax and it flys!

Does the higher power out put of Optimax out way the cost out of interest??
