Hello everyone, thought i'd ask if anyone has the same problem as me, I am recieving letters from my council including a notice which has been served on me, its seems that 2 neighbours in my road are regularly making complaints about me doing up my vehicles, The notice was served on me as the council was told I was running a car/van business from my house with out planning permision, it seems someone didn't like me digging up the grass in my front garden and concreting it, so they have fabricated a story of me running a garage and making my driveway for business  , now I have recieved a letter about noise, fair enough if I was making noise before 9am and after 5pm but beleive it or not I have been trying to respect people in my road, I work part time and am always finished doing anything to my vehicles by 5pm and I don't work everyday on the bus, the council say its industrial noise and that a log is being kept of times and activaty, and anything can be considered a nuisance, I have been cutting and grinding but this isn't all the time, and not everyday, I have spoken to a few neighbours who say I'm not a problem at all, now wondering when the next letter will drop through the door, I seem to live with some snoby gits in my road, they hate it when friends with old cars and vw's turn up, and when I lend a hand to help fix buses etc they make out i'm running a business, Control Freaks

I'm not the sort of person who has a new car and cuts the lawn with scissors (like some here), but I am always the first to offer a helping hand, I do to others what I would like done back, this has upset me as I am not a neighbour from hell  , I wish I could live nextdoor to someone like me 8)

Any advice? where do you think this will go? will I be stopped doing up my old bus?

Keep your own log - what parts you are replacing & why, who you are helping etc etc - might want to include your neighbours use of noisy mowers/strimmers etc ;)
So when they come knocking you can ask them at what point it became illegal to maintain your own vehicle & have friends

Ask the council what evidence they have collected that indicates you are running a business/making unneccessary noise & what would they deem to be acceptable.

You'll be fine fella just be aware you'll be monitored.....

just try and keep your cool, I had some tool of a neighbour complained about my huge rusty old camper and me using other peoples designated parking  fuckwitts mate, tend to be cowards that hide behind bureaucracy, I've not had any further probs after a chat with the council....

Speak to the Citizen's Advice, they are pretty good at this sort of thing.

It can look to others that is is a business if you are regularly working on it during the day, but as you say you pack up at 5, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I got moaned at for using the electric wood saw all day from a neighbour, it just happens that that is the only neighbour that is noisy & pissed at 3am waking up the whole street!

If you have the van registered in your name & you only have the one it will help your case.

Is there much more grinding to be done? As the rest of the work won't be as noisy.

bit of a shitter this, i can kind of understand where they are coming from, we have a problem with a neighbour and his tv on our ajoinging wall, the bass just pounds through, so we are curently monitoring him!

but if you say you stop by 5pm then i cant see the problem, its only the same as if someone was building a house, as above just keep a record of what you are doing, also i would contact the council yourself, explain your situation, and see what they say.

Good luck

Mark

stik with it paul dont let them put you off buddy, what will they say when you got Neils bus round there cutting it up :stonehim:

we have a similar thing going on with our neighbour they complained about the noise we have been told there is no time you can make noise between and no upper limit of the noise you can make basically any noise that can be heard by them could be taken as too loud but what we were told is a factory has to keep the noise below 15 db above the noise there so if the average street is say 70 db then they can go to 85 db every 3 db is twice as loud so that some noise they recommended i dont go above 10 db and keep the real noisy bit grinding ect to say 2hours a day (in the middle of the day)this will show the neighbours that you are making an effort to keep the noise down.
get an oppintment with the council to see there officer and discus it with him if you can prove you are doing the work for yourself then there is nothing they can do let me know how things go on

my neighbours moan about me grinding but when they go out they leave there dog outside in all weather howl like something out of hound of the baskavils if they get shitty again i'l report them to rspca my van wont take to long to fix but they will still leave there dog out had to take 2 days out work tom and wed so hopefully everyone a work and cant here me
i dont think your allowed to fix your own car nowadays not pc to upset the street fact is that half my neighbours seem to stupid to do anything themselfs perhaps they all earn far to much money and can pay people to do things but always seem to ask me when somthings not right with something

you are all far too friendly with em

I really didn't want to keep a log but me and wife now are, there is so much noise going on nearby too (stonecutters, strimmers etc), thanks for your advice :D

I usally keep my cool, but the thought of someone watching my everymove gets my blood boiling, I lost the plot yesterday and mooned at the lady over the road, I really have respected people and been trying to keep the noise down, but I've spoken to both my neighbours and both of them are more than happy, noise elsewhere in our street would be quieter and more exceptable, wonder whats going to happen next ;)

I will try to speak to the cab soon, the van is in my name, its even insured taxed and mot'd, I have fair bit more welding to do, but hoping to start using the bus by the weekend, my front chassis is rusted too, so the beam will have to be removed next month, it seems that I must do as others want, but its ok for them to do what they want, by the time I finish the first bit i finished will be rusty so its a constant welding grinding job :D

What makes me laugh is that there's a bunch of flats at the end of the adjourning road, and its full of junkies, so music shouting and a endless amount of people parking round the corner to then go collect there daily fixes, since we have started making a log of times i'm working on the bus, I have relised how noisey everyone else is and how quiet i am, there is a dog over the road thats left on his own for hours most days, it yaps and yaps, a woodworker hobyist nearby with saws planners, fast noisey cars bombing around, strimmers mowers etc, Alot of the time working on the bus is quiet, days of sorting out electrics cables fitting bits etc actually makes no noise, I try and give and take but the fact is that old people just don't want a vehicle left in the air being done up, its a eyesore and the onlyway to try get there own way is to complain about noise, they have the time too to take number plates and make logs as theyve nothing to do but sit on there arse all day and moan

Hello Ray, interesting facts, I have found the council very unhelpfull, I have asked them what i'm aloud to do, the reply was nothing that could be considered a problem, (I have now put a silencer up my arse :D), My neighbours want 100% there way, no bus no noise no mk1 escort, "why don't you sell it all and buy a nice new car" is what was recently said to me, and I was still nice back, everyone is different, if they want nice new cars (funded by mobility when they are not disabled just old) that's up to them, if I want my old bus and escort thats my choice, I have made a huge effort since the 1st letter to be quieter, but it hasn't worked, nevermind :D

Hello mate, I agree so much with what you say, I have never 'dobbed' anyone in before, but it makes you feel like starting, you too seem to be used by people when the car won't start etc, then the next day your back to being public enemy number 1  , why do we bother perhaps we should just say Bollocks go get the aa :D

Wow! I think this maybe the best advice so far, it is in reason I don't take the piss, I don't have a cat, but I can put out a good size turd or 2 myself  ,
I went to see the person yesterday 2 doors up, he wouldn't let me get a word in, he mouthed off 'and who's is that van you are working on now' , he then said this is a residentual area, hes had to work for everything hes got, he fought in the war,had enough of kids playing football and the ball breaks his flowers, he worked everyday in clarks shoes from 7 till 6, noone helped him to buy his house, he dosn't drive, I like my peace and quiet, have you got a job? where do you work? my house is bigger than yours and so much more.
He's 87 years old, and is the most misable twisted disturbed horrible man I have ever spoke too, I replyed his questions, I work as a cleaner( something I don't tell everyone) no one helped me either, he seemed to be told by others that perhaps the council had brought my house and I don't work and claim benifits, I dont claim benifits but even if I did what f*c*ing business is it of his? Its ok for him having a good job for life locally its not like that anymore you got to get any work you can, You would think that someone whos been in the war would be more of a decent man, so he's one of them who reported me

I dont know about old farts but when i was a student i lived in a small terraced street in the city and we made more noise than most. All the other houses were pensioners and we would all sit out the front and have a drink if the weather was good. There was always the odd story about the war  but the craic was always good.

Maybe they were slightly deaf i dont know :) , but it sounds like your old fart of a neighbour is taking out his anger at everyone else on you, as he sees you as an easy target.
