Hello guys,

I need a new or reconditioned engine for my 69 bay. It currently has its original 1600 and I'm thinking to replace like for like.

Anyone got any suggestions for where to go for new or recon? I want a trustworthy source I can go back to if anythings not right.

Thanks
Nathan

for me personally if its the original 1600 then i would get it rebuilt just to keep matching engine number

Personally if its an off the shelf jobbie then a Vege engine is probably your best bet 8)

I'm pretty new to the VW scene guys. Why is rebuilding the best way? I'm told its the most expensive option. Does it devalue the bus changing for new?

Thanks,
Nathan (a novice!)

How "skilled " on the tools/engineering wise are you mate and have you ever stripped, assessed a used engine and rebuilt one previously?(genuine self assessment of same is vital before undertaking such a project , it has the poss. to seriously empty your wallet, take at least 4 times the time you estimated and , if in a relationship , bring it to an end)<<<there are also a downside to it !!!

In all honesty, what I know about engines could be written on a postage stamp. I do have a reliable mechanic locally who only does VWs and he's not too expensive. He doesn't supply parts though just the labour

well , from experience , i would find out if the fella was quoting from the off a complete price or an hourly rate , then ,are you or he gonna decide on which parts supplier is used?(prices vary considerably !>very, as does quality)is he gonna work ,start to finish on your engine or fit it in around other jobs? what gaurentee is he offering ? is he a "solid" mate ,or someone you kinda know? have you acually seen his same type other work? >>lots and lots of questions you have to ask him/yourself if going for rebuild, and whichever way you go have you considered the other engine components, the ones you may be bolting back on ?

I'd pretty much have to rely on him for advice on what to buy although he'd help me source good parts.

I'm totally confident in using him. He's done everything on a friends bus and he can't recommend him highly enough. Plus Karmann konnection use him for their work.

To be honest the reason I'd considers putting a new engine in was thinking buying all separate parts could be a mine field for someone who doesn't know anything about engines

WELL, you can give him engine on a "inspect and replace as necc." deal or, ask him to strip engine, inspect and advise you ,whereby you make decision cos someone will have to ! if as you mention you are not overfamiliar with engines the former option would seem to be the one that makes sense thou i would deffo be looking to get a "ball park" figure re cost ,unless you have endless cash to throw at this project(thou i would still want an idea of cost !)

If it's any help, I had a recon from these guys a few years ago and it's been bang-on - I've tweaked it, had it in and out loads of times to play with it and it hasn't missed a beat. Cheap, will fit and even collected my van. I'm well happy...

Get it rebuilt. My engine builder is on the outskirts of Ipswich, that might be a bit far out for you though :? Although that said, what he doesn't know about VW motors ain't worth knowing ;)
