I had my 1776 with a stock box until about 18 months ago, it was fine really, and hardly ever needed to shift to 3rd on hills, the flyer does need 3rd more often due to the taller gearing. Went all the way to Newquay last weekend at at a real 70-75 ( reading like 85 on the Speedo) 200 miles and it seemed not to use any more fuel than when I've done it at 60 - about 35 litres so about 25 mpg.

Fascinating thread to read through.
I went 1776 with a Freeway Flyer.
Seems happy enough on the motorway!

With hind site think I overpaid. All from the VW Engine Company.
But I didn’t know then what I know now!!
Did you just buy the box or go for an install as well Ben72Bay. I have looked as some flier on vw air-cooled as would want an exchange unit as don’t want my bus of the road to long and having a ramp to get it out and in.

Should have said, got mine from Rich Walklate, and it was an exchange.
Fallingoffalot, what sort of cost If you don’t mind me asking. Not desperate on a new box so a plan may be end of next year until I take a look.

You won’t go any faster, it will still only cruise at 60 due to the rpm. you’ll just get there quicker. Any reasonable increase in power warrants a longer box so you can keep up with modern traffic

One can also reduce engine revs at a given true road speed, by substituting larger diameter wheels & tyres. Some 16 inch wheels with 215/65 R16C tyres, will give about 5% reduction in engine revs and 215/70 R16C tyres would give considerably more. Both will give greater ground clearance for improved off-road capability!

While this is absolutely true, it’s not always practical or desired. Such as if the bus is lowered or even if the stock appearance is the owners preference.

I will look at a box next year but will be interesting to see how it performs on a standard stock box and agree going from 40hp to around 90 is a big step so hopefully see the gains. Hoping my ICT 34 keep it balanced enough but will be re-jetted to accommodate the changes. Also asked for the new tinware to be painted in a different colour when that get powered coated as it will put a different detail to my bus as change is good sometimes.
My 1776 was fine with a stanard gear box.
185/65R15 tyres.
I only went for a gear box with different ratios when i installed a 2110cc engine.

Good to know Paulcalf and thanks for the info in your feedback.
With my 1776 I went with a trans rebuild. New crown and pinion. The only gearing I had changed was a higher 4th which is helpful over here in Canada on the Highway. In the UK it might help if you are doing a lot of motorway driving. Cooling? I have a deep sump and external oil filter. Did put in an oversize fan which broke up on me so went back to original fan. Seems to operate within temp.

More progress today by Abel. it pretty much a long block ready for the tinware. That’s currently at the powder coaters being coloured and getting the new heat exchangers done as well for good protection. Advised should be ready next week so hopefully I collect Friday the 1st November 🤞🏻
I too am considering getting my engine rebuilt by Afonso Motors, would like to know how it all goes! cheers
will do but just ask gas1man as he had a new engine from Afonso motors. Mine going ok been very good with advising me on some different stuff but I had to get new tinware as mine old engine was single port so few items different being a new twin port build. Abel a top bloke so so helpful in all aspects of detail. Will send some more details once all tinware back on and running.

Cheers Gabs

So the longblock is pretty much completed with the external oil filter in place. Tinware arrived so be nice to see the final completion.

Bus drove in. Exchanged engine and gearbox as px towards the new set up.
I’ve got a detailed list of everything I think if that’s any use to you.
Pm if so and I’ll send it across 👍
