Hi guys n' Girls,

Let me introduce myself. Having owned watercooled VW's for years I am fedup of splashing out the cash only to loose it come trade in. I recently sold my Tiguan TDI and I'm looking at buying a 69 microbus (rust free import) and having it delivered staright to T2d for a mechanical check over. Will also get a slam job, narrowed beam etc....

Also I am driving to France later on this year, the journey is about 650 miles and I'm looking at doing it all in one stint (having never driven a BAY before, now you think I'm completely mad  ) at a cruise of 65/70MPH. The engine may be fettled with (twin carbs for some extra performance) but I also want to get the gearbox out and have Cogbox refurbish and also add a taller 3rd and 4th for higher speeds.

Plenty of questions there but am I being realistic?

Cheers

Des (please be gentle this is my first post)

its not unrealistic, it just depends how deep your pockets are!

you could easily spend a few K just getting it lowered, add in to that the engine and box mods another few K

saying that if you lower your crusing speed by about 10mph you would be fine with a standard setup.

i offen cruise at 70mph and ive got a standard 1.6 with a standard box with just a pair of 34icts,will sit at 70+for hours without anyprobs

As above, I've got a stock 1600 (with stock single carb, air filter etc) and it will sit at 65 on the motorway - just it is noisy and thirsty!

At 70mph you won't be getting good fuel economy, but with a motor built for low down torque, a decent cooling system (possibly with external oil cooler needed too) and higher gear ratios it should be possible :)

I cruised down to south spain on a single port stock 1600, although 65mph cruising could be done easily on the flat, i reckon it may have been more like 50mph when you take into count the long hills in 2nd gear and the additional load. I'd prefer driving at 50mph, as the journey for me is the best bit! Is that weird?

Leon, no its not wierd I agress with you. I do 35k miles a year in a company car at ahem speeds, If I do 60-65mph in my company it drives my mad, however in the bay I'm quite happy and just enjoy the driving so much more.

same here, 1k a week in the company van..... the bus is a different story when your behind the wheel of one with a long drive before you you just settle and take it as it comes.... 8) ....

only had my bay a few weeks, drive a lorry at work 55 mph does my head in feels so slow :x drove to volksworld show doing about 55 mph felt fast enough and even though it was over 3 hr drive it was fine and wasn't all het up, piss off and worn out like i am after a 3 hr drive in a normal vehicle. with the link pin narrow beam just spent the who drive trying to stay in a straight line :D

i sold my yamaha R6 to buy my camper... say no more ;)

55-60 is fine all day long

I'm probably worrying way too much about the speed thing then

Must admit I drive my wifes Smart to and from work 55mph and 35 miles each way, and I'm quite happy at that speed (or rather lack of).

My main aim is to slam the Bay and carb up the engine and enjoy it, perhaps my first post was a bit excessive
