I'm kinda proud of myself, since I managed to replace the gen in my '71 Bay this afternoon with an altenator plus stand, without removing the engine!

It is a long and dirty job, and I almost thought it was going to be impossible when I couldn't lift the fan housing over the oil cooler, due to the fact that there is not enough space above the engine in the engine compartment.

In the end, I had to remove the carb, fuel pump and distributor to be able to reach the four bolts that hold the altenator plate to the fan housing. The nut on the front left side of the altenator stand was also quite difficult to fasten, moving only about 2mm at a time, before the grip of the spanner had to be changed.

I was surprised to find that the clamp of the gen works perfectly to hold the altenator as well.

Had a long shower afterwards, wife made some nice food, and we're off to bed now. Good night everyone!

I was most proud of this fix, done whilst camping in France. One of the studs holding the oil cooler on snapped, leading to oil being pumped directly out of the engine! Fixed it in a French campsite, without taking the engine out - though it did need some bodywork modification - see bottom few pics on this page:

:D

Indeed - I was stranded without breakdown recovery back to the UK - and more important I had a lovely passenger who 'wanted to go to Paris..'

I now have a proper hatch to tidy up the whole with when I get round to it - for the last 'many' years it has had a plywood 'patch'!
