After a great day out covering around 50 miles, got back to our village and called at the shop for a few beers, saying to michelle someones got a fire going today smelly bloody thing !.Then only 3 or 4 mins drive back to our house pulls up outside, looked in the rear mirror only to see smoke coming from the vents,Shit all out..Gets the extinguisher out opens the engine lid small flames coming out,but its under the rear appron.Looks under and some fire retardent sound proofer had droped onto the exhaust and cought fire maybe had some oil on it ?.Put it out ok made me sweat a bit, don`t need that .Not too much damage and van fired up ok afterwards.

personaly i would have given the fire extinguisher a quick blast down the vents before opening the enginebay lid!!

nice to see all is well with your van though!!

i know we all love our vans to bits, but just remember how unpredictable fire can be... you open that lid and let loads of fresh air in.. and all hell breaks loose if you dont know what type of fire your dealing with!!

just becareful folks!! :D

Scarey...............

Glad it was nothing more seroius. Dumping the contents of the extinguisher down the vents sounds good practice but surely that wouldnt get much further than the battery trays? As for not feeding the fire with oxygen, those vents should pull in enough air for the engine to breath and aid some heat ventilation as well so in such a confined area i doute opening the engine lid would make things much worse (although the first licks of flame and smoke coming around the engine lid might make it look worse?)

Surely the question is why have you got sound proofing in the rear valance. Is that to keep the noise inside the engine bay?
I was considering putting some heat shield in my valance to cut down on heat transfare from the exhaust but i was going to fit metal mugs to retain it in place.

Well done for carrying a fire extinguisher anyway and look on the bright side.........if you had had one of those fire systems fitted it would have gone off and ruined a perfectly good engine.

Got them all out first ,then the Extinguisher - well done mate and
glad damage was minimal .............focusses the mind for everyone

lucky escape there fella, could have been a lot worse :( luckily you had an extinguisher :D .
Im insured with RH Specialist and part of the policy (verbally over the phone)was that I must have/carry an extinguisher at all times.
Ive not read the policy to check but the first thing I bought was an extinguisher. ;)

Seems like a smoky weekend...

I had an incident with a loose piece of fresh air pipe that fell into the crankcase pulley well and started to smoulder,

and there's a couple of people who's hot exhausts have ignited their fresh air tubes...
