My block has AS051629 which i think is a 1974 1600cc engine (obviously not original!)
I have a single flat pancake filter on the engine at the moment and want to switch back to an original oil bath one.
Is this a good move and will the engine timing need resetting?
What type of oil bath do i need. Would this one do on e bay?

oil bath is better than the pancake ones imo , just changed my self back to an oil bath and its runs a lot smother on tickover , plus the carb expects it to be there really . the one on ebay is right but is missing the connecting pipe to the carb :)

Check that you still have the mounting bracket on the right hand side of the engine bay.
If your van has had twin carbs at sone time chances are it will be cut off.
The van should run better with the oil bath. You might need to tweak the mixture a bit depends on what was changed when the pancake went on.
Timing will be the same.
