All you did was oil change?

sump plug or plate?

changed seals and washers with the oil,but its not leaking there,it was fine before
dont really want the motor out again yet,its just three spots .

Hi Rich!

Did the oil on mine a few weeks back b4 my hol. My sump plate and mesh was a bit manky, and i think mine may still be leaking from there, i did do the nuts up tight, went for run, and nipped up again. Didn't make any difference, really should have changed the filter and plate but forgot. I have some drips on mine too. Will replace the lot inc bolts next time. and hope i have not started to strip the bolts by over-tightening!

Unless it's coming from further up? Not the push rod seals is it?

Cheers!

Alistair

Where does it appear the oil is coming from, if its dripping off your heat exchangers its probably the rocker gasket or push rod tube seal.

If you over fill vdub engines it can push the crank seal out so you will get an oil leak at the gear box mating flange.

Best thing to do is post where the leak or oil is dripping from, that way you might get an answer as to why you now have a leak, and the best way to fix it.

Got a real problem with oil leaking from one of my rocker covers put 2 new seals in and its started dripping again!!!

Ian

its a pain in ass, its dripping off the right hand tin

looks like it is gear box end, ass for the rockers i changed the seals on them as well
all the push rod seals have been done

Just a quick check does the oil have a distinct strong smell, just wondering if it may be hypoid oil from the gear box.

Probably not but sounds like the rocker gasket is leaking.
I have had no end of problems getting the rubber rocker gaskets to seal, the best ones Ive fitted so far are the erlin cork ones, never leaked, until I took to covers off to set the valves, and now I dont seem to be able to get a seal, think Im going to have to resort to either blot up covers or silicon on the seals.

Try a thin smear of silicon on the rocker gasket both sides.

Hi Rich!

If it is the rocker gaskets, i only use the cork gaskets, i'd only ever thought thats all you could get anyway, didn't know there were rubber ones available.
Having just fitted new alloy finned rocker covers to mine, i never use any silicon sealer, as if any comes off inside the cover, it may get into a oil way, i hate the stuff! I run a good healthy smear of grease around the cover lip right to the edge, maybe half a mill or so thick, then put on the cork gasket, and repeat with the grease. Then fit. Never had a leak yet! Well, not from the rocker covers anyways!

Maybe your cover is distorted if it's leaking from there. I have some cork gaskets, and you can have my old covers if you like, they were not leaking before i changed them. Normally if the leak, they tend to get on the heat exchanger and stink.

I still have a little leak on my engine somewhere, there is certainly drips on my sump plus/strainer area, i think i need a new strainer plate etc as mentioned in my earlier post, may look out for a thicker billet/stainless one?

Cheers!

cheers Alistair,i put new cork ones in and greased them up.
i think ill let it run abit and get under and see where its coming from ;)

ok m8 - maybe clean off the area with brake/clutch/parts cleaner aerosol so you can see what's what?

If you want the gaskets and my old rockers you are more than welcome.

Cheers!

thanks mate

Silicon is ok as long as you dont treat it like sealing a bath.
Just a thin wipe on each side, if any does come loose which is unlikely as long as the gasket are new, it will go down the push rod tube and into the sump where the strainer will catch it.

Silicon is not an ideal fix but it does work, not sure how grease works as a sealing agent especially when the heads get to over 100 deg C, doesn't the grease melt?

Hi!

Wise words - it aint a bath - unfortunately most of the ones i have seen have it caked all over!
Good point about it melting, i'm sure any excess would, though at least it aint gonna block anything. Someone told me about the grease trick instead of just a dry fit with gasket, and either i have been lucky, but never had a oil leak from there - likewise, it's a good nice smear - but not proper caked in it if you know what i mean. Also the grease tends to make to cover stay in place a little as you move the bail arm in place

Good point Alistair

I think I will have to try the grease thing when I get hold of some new cork gasket, I know what you mean about holding the gasket in place, ifs a pain trying to dry fit rocker gasket, I like the point about the grease holding it in place.

Ian

@£$%^!! Sod it! Just been to the rubbish in mine and mines leaking all over the heat exchanger now. Grr!! I thought the bail arm felt not as tight as my old one......Back to square one again.....Doh!
