Oil leak

Just a thought. But how are you venting your engine ? Long story cut short, similar hard to find leak was my vent pipe that I`d run to a bottle and used the wrong sort of pipe, this had swollen and jammed itself in the neck of the bottle thus creating a plug instead of a vent. Cut some holes in the bottle and job done. Need to sort out the vent properly though  . Just thinking that if your vent ain`t working like mine wasn`t, or even blocked, the extra pressure could be just forcing the oil out of any nook or cranny, on mine it was coming out the dipstick and blowing all over the place. I would have sworn it was coming from the fuel pump.
Perhaps just try venting with something other than the existing vent just for a trial. Mine would only leak when on a good run and when good and hot but not around town or in very cold weather.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Let`s hope it`s simple

Cheers ozziedog mine comes out the dipstick to the right carb I did notice it was really getting gunked up with this white creamy elephant spunk kind of stuff

What pipe did you use and where did you position your bottle

Hi mate. I took my vent pipe off the filler neck and ran it to a one litre evian bottle that I just sat between the battery and the rear lights. Where is your vent pipe coming off at the moment ? and where`s he going to ? You could get a similar problem with a blocked pipe I spose. Can it be cleaned out ? Thinking out loud,, could you try it without the filler cap on and just jam some sort of larger pipe over the filler just to raise it a bit ?

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, It is vented innit ?

Don't use a bottle, you'll cover your engine bay in a film of oil and may get fumes pulled through the heater vents.
Go back to stock oil filler/breather and vent into one or both carbs with a large diameter pipe.
All the white "mayonnaise" is caused by short journeys not burning the condensation off and inadequate engine breathing.

Sorry mate,, trying to concentrate on a few things at once
But !!!!! It does sound like it may not be venting properly and this may be exaggerating the situation. The `clean' pipe in the bottle is meant to be a temporary thing to prove the issue. It was also meant to be this on my bus  But temporary on my bus has turned into a year or so :? So maybe try a clean pipe and see if that does the trick, as SparkyWig says, it`ll be a lot better if you wack it into the carb and burn the fumes and vapour

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,, Been told off again :msn4: ;) :msn4:

Sorry Ozzie didn't mean to sound bossy

Thanks for the reply I'll look at sourcing a new oil filler neck then and see it it improves

Mark, can you post a pic of your whole engine for us mate including this dipstick breather thingy you mention. If that's the only crankcase ventilation you have then it's no ventilation at all really and it's no wonder there is oil being forced out. The fact you have Dual carbs as well just adds to the problem. They increase crankcase pressure quite a bit. I had a 1500 SP that leaked just like yours and it turned out it was purely down to the crappy aftermarket oil filler I had fitted that didn't breath properly. When I converted that engine to a 1641TP I fitted rocker cover breathers vented to a breather box and fitted a thicker rubber washer to the oil filler so the breather outlet faced up instead of down and vented that to the breather box as well. Hey presto, it hasn't leaked since and it gets thrashed rotten ;)

That sounds right up my street dude I'm in work at the mo I'll try to load a pic in a bit

Cheers

Mark

Found a pic if you zoom in you can see the breather going from the oil filler to the carb on the right

MARK !!!
I didn`t mean being told off by you
Sparkywig has told me off a few times for my vent in the bottle  AND !!!! I know he`s right, but I don`t get fumes through or maybe I`m just used to it

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Yes Wiggy I`ll do that (How`s Gina ?) :p :p :p

Ok, see where you`re at now. Just try cleaning that pipe out and check the oil filler ain`t gunked up as well and possibly where it enters the carby. I think you are on the right track with the elephant spunk stuff

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, A picture is worth a thousand words

All good Ozzie
I'll give it a clean out tomorrow and hopefully it sorts it

I had similar problems to you after I fitted my twin Kadrons. The engine was as dry as a bone on the standard setup but seemed to leak from everywhere after the Kadrons went on. I found a few breathing problems along the way and still have one to sort. I'd tried the filler neck you have in the photo but the problem is that the diameter of that breather outlet is smaller than the stock one (about 3/4 the size) and you have more crankcase pressure with the twin carbs...
I ended up fitting a CB tower that vents to both carbs and has inlets from both rocker covers. I also found that the oil deflector plate under the dynamo/alternator was fitted the wrong way round allowing oil to get thrown into the filler neck.

The leaks are mostly cleared (and I'm using a lot less oil!) but I still have a small leak from the oil cooler area. Having already changed the cooler seals back in September I am now going to change the cooler itself as I hear that they can get clogged up and are impossible to clear; years of old style, non-detergent oils being the culprit. If that's not the problem then maybe I have a cracked block under the oil cooler

Yup, that oil filler is the culprit for sure. They are crap and at the very least its not helping. Try fitting a new thicker seal between it and the alternator stand so the breather outlet faces up and any oil that makes it into the hose can drain back down. With your twin carbs, I would also vent your rocker covers to a breather box. It's easy to do. Just buy the fittings and hose from any of the usual suspects and drill the rocker covers and front engine tin yourself.

Thanks for the advice yachty I'll get a breather kit and attempt to fit it but I'm a paramedic not a parmechanic so watch this space :?

You shouldn't really need to vent the rocker covers unless you've got a large capacity motor.
Mark, stock breather vented into carbs, no oil but a slightly dusty engine bay.

Gets rid of this *****.

Yep that's what mine looks like
So I'll ditch it and get a stock one ASAP and also a breather box

I'll update when all done

Thanks sparky

I took the oil filler off snd the breather hose this morning and it was solid with gunk so there lies my problem as already highlighted by sparkywig.
So I cleaned it all out made up another washer so the outlet for the breather sits uppermost and then found the pipe was kinking as its too short so I've had to put a piece of garden hose on till I can get some proper hose tomorrow

Oh we'll off to work I go :(
