Is it okay to reuse old oil pump cover nuts? Perhaps use some sealant on the base?

Or should I buy new ones:

I'm also using one of those adapter plates to install a T1 engine into a bus, if that makes a difference? :party0021:

The ones shown are Nylocks (prevailing torque fasteners), which shouldn't be re-used. However, from the factory the oil pump cover nuts weren't nylocks, or anything special- they were just M8 nuts- nothing fancy. You can re-use what you've got (assuming they're in OK condition).

The original nut is not a normal nut, it has a sealing portion built in-

I do not use them, i place a bit of sealant around the stud and use the same stainless nyloc nuts i normally use on the assembly of the engines i sell. No leaks so far.
On late cases the studs have a closed boss, not allowing any oil to pass through the studs, whereas the earlier cases have an open hole which could potentially leak if the studs have been removed/changed and are loose on the case.
If the pump gasket allows to pass oil to the studs, it will definitely allow to leak on the side of the pump too. . So make sure your cover and pump are flat first.
For the pump cover gasket, i place a small amount of sealant between my fingers and just "wet" the gasket massaging it between my fingers. No excess, no blocked passages and no leaks. It works for me.

I might be wrong, but I thought that was a sealant instead of a Nylok?

Ah okay, that makes it a bit easier. :character0036:

Abel

Amazing information as always Abel, thank you. I will follow this closely. :party0047:

Happy to be proven wrong- I would have thought though that if leakage were an issue at the time, VW would have used acorn nuts, like they did on the sump plate. Ah well :)

I don't think you are wrong, the sealant probably acts as a threadlock as well.

I think I am going to go with:

'Wet' the gasket with sealant as Abel says
Sealant on the base of the studs
Washers
M8 Nylocks

:shadey:

are these pictured nuts supposed to go "plastic" side to the cover? In similar manner to 6 main case stud nuts which are of the same construction?

Yes, I believe the plastic side is the sealant to create the seal, so it needs to go against the cover.
