Hi.

So I want to change my oil pump due to low oil pressure on fast idle. The VW official servicing manual states that the engine needs to be removed to do this. I have looked around the various forums and you tube and can't find evidence to suggest that this can be done with the engine still in place on the vehicle. Has anybody done this? If so how did you torque the flywheel back in as I have found it impossible to get a torque wrench into the rear of the engine bay with the socket attached, it just won't fit. Any help much appreciated :)

Chris.

In theory it should be possible. Whether it is a good idea in practice, I don't know.
My worry would be about torquing the front pulley up correctly.
Potentially could this cause some damage to your gearbox (you'd have to leave it in gear to give it something to go against)?

Basically though:
1. drain your oil
2. remove front pulley
3. remove tinware from behind pulley
4. remove pump

Installation is just the reverse process.

I take it that you have type 2 engine. Remove rear engine tray, remove crankshaft pulley and tin wear behind pulley then you can get at oil pump. You may have to improvise some type of puller to get pulley off and will need puller to remove oil pump.Installation is just reverse . Torque pulley nut by putting in first gear and having some one appply footbrake. Are you sure that it is oil pump, as from what you have discribed it sounds more like bearing problems. :?: :!:

Yeah standard 1600 from 71 Bay. It may be that the engine is due an overhaul, just want to change the pump as its not cost much for the parts and on the off chance it will solve the problem. I have the puller tool ready to go.

Sounds simple, hope it is in practice. My biggest worry is torquing the pulley up correctly.

I did mine with engine in place when I fitted GB full flow kit, I supported it on fence posts and jacks.
So I'd say it's possible, but a cowboy operation

I pulled the bumper, apron and front tin off then you have lots of access. Pull the pump and do your fix. I've done this a few times.
