I buy cheap stuff, Havoline 10w40 £8 for 5 litres from Asda, but I do change the oil every 1000 miles
Figure its cheap insurance for the engine to replace it that often. Tried a couple of other oils a while back but the engine ran hotter with them.
Duckhams semi synethic 10w40. I asked my mechanic who's been servicing (and rallying) VWs for 40 years. He swears by duckhams semi synthetic and said it wouldn't need changed as often.
he only changes the oil in his 54 oval every 10K miles, he's had it for 30 years now.
An important thing to remember is not to mix monograde and synthetics together if your running one or the other. It can cause particulates dissolved in the synthetic grades to drop out of suspension if you add monograde to top it up. bad for your engine.
Stick in some regular 10w40 and forget about it. I doubt the previous owner was putting in uber expensive oil. If you want to be on the safe side, drop the old oil and fill it up with the brand of your choice. Any 10w40 will do, Morrisons are doing Texaco Havoline for £8 a can. Tescos own brand is very good too.
If you dont know whats in it, use semi-snythetic (any 10W40) as it won't do any harm if there is monograde already in it. its monograde into synthetic that can cause dirt to deposit. Your obviously draining it anyway so it will be fine.
76 is simply an American fuel company. Theyve gained 'iconic' status in the VW world as they sponsor(ed) race meets and were prevailant on the drag scene liverys etc. The arial balls you see are now used as retro accesories, from when they were issued as promotional tat back in the day.
Aside from all that, 76 produce a straight 30 oil which is much higher rated than the Morris straight 30 oil (AP ratings are shown on the containers). I know all the arguements about oil (straight vs multigrades etc), Im not getting into any of that here, I choose to use Straight 30 and from that I think that 76 is the best quality one, and its reasonably easy to get from shows.
