When i was at the local paint store today getting some thinners (so i can start preping) i enquired about the price of some paint.
L50K Neptune blue (was down as 50K on the computer system but we found it in the end) worked out at just under £150 for 5 litres, not a bad price BUT only available in 2 Pack.
5 litres of Cellulose in any colour i want just under £50 (both prices are paint only and need the price of the thinners and hardeners on top)
Spoke to my mate who will be doing the spraying and he doesn't have the equipment for 2 pack so i now need to take the van down to the paint shop and use there colour books to try and match it as close as possible to the neptune blue that we want to stay with.
Anyone else had any issues buying paint? What did you do?

i normally use a chap up the road who colour matchs. its normally comes out one or two shades darker but in a year or so it will be near exact. try your yellow pages and ask the same qusetion. if they colour match or mix by weight.

Give these guys a call, there just round the corner from my mothers and I may be dropping in on them myself at easter....

I don't understand how he doesn't have the right equipment for 2 pack?

Its only water base where you need specialist drying equipment or a proper heated booth.

Unless he means he hasn't got the right fluid tip for his gun? :?

Out of interest, what make was the 2k?

you should wear a spray suit with gloves and hood, and a good charcoal mask at a minimum, you should use an air supply system from a filtered source to be safe
The fumes given off are equivalent to cyanide.
A vented spray booth is probably what the sprayer doesnt have

I agree with chrisbee,2K can be lethal if you keep subjecting yourself to its fumes. But I would rather paint my bus in 2 pack and find a different painter than use cellulose, which will probably sink back on an old bus.

So if you painter can't spray your 2 pack, find someone who can

My sprayer is a mate who's doing the spray job in his garage at his house at NO charge!
He has a 200L compressor, devilbliss spray gun, gas heater but he hasn't got an air fed mask that is the recommendation when using 2K.
I would prefer 2k but at this price i'm not arguing
He has painted many things in the past and actually prefers to use celly so i'm not going to argue with him.

The finish isn't as durable either.

Ahhh right! Didn't think it would be some one spraying at home!

I forget I'm spoilt with having a booth at my disposal

2 pac it loads better finish & is very tough. I have sprayed a few things with just a charcoal mask. If you are painting loads often the full kit is needed. As long as your skin is covered you will be ok.

I did my cabinets last week in 2psc. I did my trekker last year too. You don't need heat for the paint to dry, if you use an express hardener it will go of in a couple of hours. You can flat & polish it in 2 days with air drying.

Cellulose will take about 6 weeks to cure fully. It still moves & settles, you can get sink marks in filler. I used to use celly, & found 2pac awkward to get used to. I would never go back.

You can hire a spray bake for about £100, so why not do it in one? The extra money you spend will be saved in added value of the van & long term finish. Do it once, do it right.

Will speak to my mate before i buy the paint, when i rung him earlier about which paint he agrees that 2 pac is a better finish but were going to spray it in an enclosed double garage.
Regardless of which has he better finish SAFETY IN THE MAIN PRIORITY :!:
If i could you 2 pac then i would but dont think its a viable option unless my mate has other ideas closer to the day.

Just another quicky.
Is 5 litres of paint over kill? With added thinners and hardeners this will make about 7(?) litres of paint. Would rather have to much than to little but not so much as i could another van with the leftovers

depends on how many coats you want to put on the vehicle, the more coats you have the deeper the shine you can get [or so i was told].

the last vehicle i sprayed i put 5 coats on, put 2 coats on then used 1200 grit, then anotehr 2 then 1500, then last dust coat and flatted with some funky 2000grit sponge pads and then used g3/6 and wow what a shine.

not sure if ill got as mad this time round thought :)

You need to leave cellulose weeks really before you flat & polish it. It doesn't settle completely until it's rock hard. That can take months.

It can dull off over time, so you would need the extra coats. Every time you polish it, you will take a layer off.

You can get a good finish on it as you have proved. What was it like over time? This time of your you will need anti bloom thinners too.

2k isnt as dangerous as it used to be but always wish to take precautions. celly is much easier to work (cut and polish) once its set which take two weeks to become fully hardend(ie all the solvents removed) yyou can gauge when its hard by sniffing the paint. if it still smells like paint then its not fully hardened. the longest ive had was a set of sprintstars which took 3weeks. the paint shop next door to us, the roughest lad sprays 2k with no mask  not wise. the said its minimum of 3 coats 2k and 5 coats in celly.

sorry fella mind must have been else where

Having been in Accident repair for 30+ years I've watched all the paints develop over that time, cellulose, synthetics, 2k and water based.

It all depends on what you require, original factory finish or mirror finish ala custom. I prefer an original finish which would have a slight peel but its what ever floats our boat at the end of the day. I would go for 2k all day long and invest in a good brand. REM, Sikkens Dupont, but Glasurit was always a sh*t hot product in my book, even just for that lovely 'peardrop' aroma

look to hire a booth locally if you can it will make all the difference.
Drop coat, 2 full should be enough, but you could bake it off, flat and put one more reduced coat on for a flat finish. Then de-nib flat and polish.

Good luck whatever you choose to do. :)
