I'm looking at an early bay for sale which was restored; original condition looks really solid.

The only thing putting me off buying it (from the photographs) is what looks like a cheap/ lazy paint job.

Lots of L87 over spray on the battery and cables and parts of the engine around it.

The wheels look as if the tyres were still on them when painted.

I realize that a paint job can cost anything between £2- £8000, but what would you consider to be a lazy job? Should the engine be at least removed? Am I being too fussy?

The seller said that it was given primer and baked, then painted although no photographs show this.

Paint can hide a multitude of problems such as filler instead of metal. If there is not enough supporting photos of all work done, i would walk away. If they couldn't mask the wheels properly or the wiring in the engine bay, what else have they cut corners on ?

I asked for photographs of the original and got a couple of phone pictures with the doors off! Perhaps the bus was just perfect. :)

The search continues (slowly).

My paint job cost £1500 but that was 'mates rates' I must say the over spray is a little sloppy tbh although that doesn't mean it's had a bad resto. Having filler isn't a bad thing either, a little skim here and there is standard thing but lumps covering rust is naughty.

Can anyone who knows about classic cars & buses go with you to look at it?

Personally I would recommend staying away from any van that has been sprayed less than say 3 years ago (unless you know the before condition). In three years...most dodgy paint job coverups would be showing signs of filler repairs etc.

Agree with above - my van had a respray just before I bought it - 50% filler and bodge :(
Walk away unless they have full documentation of the rebuild.
