I have a locking Petrol Cap for my Westy but the seal is well and truly knackered.

Is it possible to get a replacement or would it be possible to make one from thin rubber?

Any tips appreciated.

Hi!

Could you make one from cork? Just a thought? You may be able to get some flooring from B&Q, make a whole batch and sell to us all, thus earning you some money, and paying for the floor tiles.... ;)
Only joking, cork may do, or as you say, some rubber. Would need to be fairly thick, or rigid rubber though?

Hiya wens,

I just had to this very job last year.

Rubber and cork both have liabilities in this particular application.

Rubber, besides being susceptible to gasoline, tends to bind when the cap is tightened down against the filler tube.

Cork does a fine job but will tend to crumble after a bit of use.

Instead visit your local auto supply store and tell the techs what you have in mind. There is a special gasket material made for this very application. The sheet of material I got was baby blue - nice and arty! Then all you have to do is cut out your new gasket.
