Was having a poke round the bay today and found a lot of bodged filler and fibreglass (on inner wings and sills mainly). I want to remove this and plate new steel in (obviously new sills will be fitted).
What thickness of steel do most people use and where can i buy some from as i also need to weld in bits and peices to various other places that i'm not happy with.

(Also asked on VZI)

I tried various thicknesses but settled on 1.5mm - thin enough to bend/shape but strong enough for body repairs. You'd probably want something thicker for chassis repairs though!

;)

Some motor factors/parts suppliers stock sheet metal which is quite thin and suitable for general welding, they may also stock angled lengths and curved sections too.Thicker stuff you will have to search out.I have a metal fabrication works next door to my workshop which can supply me with various thickness of metal, and they can cut it too.Find a local one to you?

As for what thickness to use stick to the same thickness as what you are welding to.

Theres a number of little body repairs that need doing and i'd rather weld new metal in then fill it. What thickness are bodypanels normally as this is the size i will need?

1.5 to 2mm for body and 3mm for chassis depending on use thats what ive been using

Took me a while to find a supplier (mainly as I was looking on Sat mornings and most steel stockholders seem to trade M to F only) - I eventually got a very large sheet of 20 gauge (0.9mm) mild from Partco (Unipart) - cost about £20 inc VAT

I usually buy 16 guage, about 1.5 mm.
The last time I bought some from a steel supplier ( A while ago , before steel prices went up) it was about £5.00 for a square metre.

Mark.
