Evening,

had the van a few weeks now and all is going well. Only problem is she seems to be using an extortionate amount of petrol, she only gets about 13 to the gallon we've worked out! Now we know they are a juicy vehicle, but this is definitely bot right. So, this weekend will be spent giving her a bit of a going over to try and sort things! I was going to check the obvious plugs, air filter, carb etc. But was wondering if anyone had come across the same issue as a result of a common problem.

Also, any advice on anything else I should check would be appreciated!

Cheers
Sean

give it a general service , oil, plugs etc and then get a local car tuner to give it a proper tune up , they should sort out if there are any carb issues....well worth the 60 or so sheets......fill the van with juice though cause they`ll use it

let us know how ya get on fella

my moneys on the timing being out - the timing must be set with a strobe to be bob on,otherwise that will lead to poor consumption, rough running & a host other longer term problems.

got a twin port in it? check for air leaks around the inlet manifold by spraying a little wd40 on the joints,if the idle picks up momentarily then you have a air leak which is altering the fuel/air ratio being provided by the carb to the cylinders.

might be worth checking idle/mixture screws are set correctly on the carb?

daft q,but check you havn't got a fuel leak.

forgive me if any of theses suggestions are a bit insulting but I'm not sure on what you do/do not know. hope it helps!

Cheers people.

No offence taken doris, all new to the air cooled world so just finding my way around the van. It's a single port though, don't know what that changes!

Will do as planned and give her a service then look at a tune up!

I argree with timing issues what doris says, my little joke the van pulled on me check costed me a few extra liters too.
I also have got some complaints of gas fumes of peeps driving behind me when leaving the gym at night, yesterday they said its not smelly anymore.

good luck acquiring experiences ;)

Just been to Scotland and back (from the south coast) running a 1700 just had new twin webbers 34s and electronic ignition (petronix) fitted. at a steady 50 to 60 mph did about 22 mpg on way up. Pretty pleased with that :D

Would have thought poor (high) consumption very likely to be carbs and timing  - went for the petronix to help that out reckoned I would recoup the cost this summer.

I also agree with the petronix story,I definitely noticed a reduced fuel consumption (both on bug & bus). best £60 I ever spent, never had any problems with it! ,maybe something for the shopping list?
