Our 68 Devon has now been re sprayed and is now a lovely blue and white but the roof canvas is the brown/yellow/white finish which in my opinion spoils the look of the van. We are thinking of changing the canvas to a more appropriate colour. As we stay in Scotland we do not have anyone local who can carry out the work. My question is, if I was to buy a replacement top how easy is it to fit.
I dont mind tackling the work but am concerned that I end up taking on too much.

Has anyone tackled this before, any advice would be welcomed

I have considered taking the van to Newcastle where I see there is a company who could carry out the work, but its still a long way from us.

cheers

Andy

We did the lot in two days, new jk roof cap, canvas and painted metalwork. Nothing too complicated but the roofs quite heavy as original, if you put the jk cap on it took 6 people to lift and hold it whilst it was re attached

I know what you`re saying about the colours of the Devon canvas. To me, without wishing to upset anyone :msn4: To me it`s a little drab, I got the same on mine but it`s a later type of Devon roof but still as drab as drab could be :( There are quite a few makers and stockists out there and if you leave the roof on it don`t look like a humungous job. I reckon there are a couple of threads on here as to restoring and repairing Devon pop tops. Which canvas do you have at the moment? is it the pleated one or straight sided one ?? You make it sound like you are in the middle of nowhere, aren`t there many Vee Dub places up your way then mate. I shall be sorting mine this winter, but as I say mine is a later one. The roof cap is about the best thing since sliced bread for the original Devons to stop the actual top from leaking as mentioned above. There is a nice roof resto in Steve`s rebuild thread (Hotrod) In Gallery, just below General and that looks even betterer in the flesh.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,

We spent a long time deciding on changing the colour scheme from brown/white to blue/white as we wanted the van to be a fun colour and are really pleased with the finish. The canvas is straight sided but when the roof is up the brown/yellow/white canvas just looks dull and wrong.
Have been in touch with Dave from proudtopop.co.uk and he has sent samples for us to look at. So it looks like we will be heading to Gateshead soon to let them do their magic.
Unfortunately I do not know of many workshops up here in Scotland that specialise in roof refurb .
I would love try and fit the canvas myself but don't want to make a mess of it.
