Anythings possible....

Yes someone has done it but for the life of me I cant remember who / where I read it...it may well have been a link on a thread on here..... in fact it was deffinately on here

memory serves they used the steering components from a Rascal...a lot of work involved, not one for the feint hearted..

Its not actually to bad to do, just a tad time consuming and can be expensive. A friend of mine had power steering on his late bay, it even had a variable adjuster so that you could tighten or loosen the steering, depending where or what you were doing. Its basically just a motor driven steering column.

The unit just sat below the indicator stalk where the shaft mounts to the dash, nice little unit. 8)

It sounds like what Im after, any pics or more details on what unit to use, is it from a rascal as mentioned, ? much appreciated.

The other way to do it is to fit the rack & pinion that creative do, that combined with a weedeater beam would be sick! hang on a min, that gives me an idea......................

^ thats me doing the EPS / rack conversion in those links. i dont come on here much but if i can help with any questions ask away. its actually very easy to do if you can weld....but bear in mind that you really need a good condition slack free steering system for it not to feel really vague! This is a problem with early bay steering boxes.

I have the EPS linked to the rascal rack and also a weedeater beam...altho i have made my own air suspension set up properly mounted to the chassis.

Nice one Rich - didn't notice it was you

Can you tell us a bit more about the ride quality etc, have you had any problems with the setup?

Cue lots of questions...

;)

ahem...i should say that my vans all work in progress  - whilst i have finished certain elements of it (like steering, suspension, brakes etc) i havent actually driven it yet - any of you that have seen my van will know its modified beyond the norm - hence it taking me a while.....

i am currently trying to work out if i can get my steering to be properly speed related as i have ABS rings on my porsche hubs.

i do actualy own a website i keep meaning to start to put all my mods on....but i dont have enough time!

Hi rich, thanks for the advice, Ive just started to get some parts together. Im ok at welding and machining its the electrics that I have trouble with, so Ill be back to you at a later date for some advise, if thats ok, cheers.

electrics the easiest bit - buy a controler on ebay....and wire it in as per instructions - there are lots of different ones from about £40 upwards.

YOu may want to think about which indicator stalks you use...corsa ones are apparently hard to wire in so you may want to use something off a simpler car or maybe modify your orignal VW ones.Ill be using the corsa stuff cos i like to make my life hard - i havent done this bit yet as i dont actually have a loom....ill be making my own from scratch when the time comes.

Ive seen s/hand units for sale on e bay which include ecu boxes, are these the controlers? if not which one do I need as Im fitting it to a type 2 steering box :?: I appreciate your help.

no probs...you need the power steering column and the Vauxhall corsa ECU - which may be refferd to as a controller - they are a box about 4 inches square and are mounted on the column.

you can see the Ecu - square box on this just above the motor;

In addition to this you will need a controller.....

something like this will do: there are others on the market and i have no idea ifthis ones any good - just and example.

then you just wire one to the other using the instructions with the controller.
