Hi All

The rear suspension on my 68 has been dropped 3 splines (Which is proving to be a bit too low)

Is it an easy job to raise it up a spline (Can i do it myself) or should i get someone to do it for me?

Also, where can i find a step by step guide on what to do?

I've got a general understanding so would like to give it a go myself, but don't want to jump in feet first! ;-)

Cheers all

:D

You should be able to fine tune it quite easily...

check out the video on you tube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMxBolHOJR4

its a type 3 but principles are all there..

you have 44 splines on the inner and 48 on the outer rotating 1x spline adjusts 8 degs 10 mins inner and 7 degs 30 mins outer...which means you can adjust in as small an incremental steps as 40 mins.....

1. Jack up van
2. Fit axle stand
3.Remove wheel
4. Remove shock absorber
5. Undo the three bolts which attach the rear hub assembly to the spring plate.
6. Carefully move the hub assembly from the spring plate, taking care not to damage the copper brake pipe and support hub on bricks similar.
7. Undo spring plate/torsion bar cover bolts
8.Remove cover
9. Almost Remove spring plate by pulling ALMOST off end of torsion bar , taking care to leave torsion bar located in position on chassis tube.
10. Withdraw spring plate noting original position and then rotate spring plate anti clock wise a little until plate will locate on next spline position (one setting lower.
11. Reverse actions 8-1 in that order
12 Check van ride height.

I did this on a later bay to raise the height to allow me to fit stock wheels as i was planning a lot of motorway trips that year. If all the bolts come undone etc you should be able to pull this off in a chilled out manner in under 8HRS,

hope this gives you an idea  .

So you don't need to disconnect the handbrake cables in order to pull the axles out of the end of the spring plates? :?:

No!, i dont remember having to disconnect the cable or remove the drum, just leave the hub connected up and push it to the side and support it on something.

I think he wants it raising 1 notch so rotate clockwise.

When it was dropped 3 splines were these outer or inner splines or a combo as it will make quite a difference?

And as I stated above you can fine tune it a bit in steps of 40' if need be just keep a good record of starting point and wether it was inner or outers you've adjusted...

Cheers Araon, i always automatically think of lowering not raising when thinking this operation out. You are right in saying its a matter of playing around with the inner/outer spline combination before you get the right height for your individual bus

Cheers for the reply's all

I think it's inners but like you all said, i will have to have a play around and see how i get on.

Thanks again for all the replys
