hello i am a newbie. i have a question i have knockin coming from my steering box can any body help me and tell me how to remove it thanks chris

Hi Chris ..

The box itself comes out reasonably easy .. except ..!

Getting the arm off the steering box is an absolute bugger .. you won't shift it without the proper tools ( like a very large ball joint splitter..) ..

I had to cut mine off but i had a spare on the new steering box anyway ..

I would make 100% certain it needs replacing before attempting to remove it .. check all your drag link and track rods before commiting to the steering box .. and don't forget you can adjust the play on the box, with the screw on the side .. if its too sloppy you will get a knock as it takes up the slack when you turn the steering from one side to another ..

Good luck :D

On this note, the lock off nut attached to this screw has rusted on. The screw (and nut) moves freely. Can i just unscrew the whole lot to get the nut moving and then re-fit? Nothing can displace inside the steeing box if i do so can it?

Thanks

thank you very much will try that first wasnt looking forward to taking it of so hope it works

Yes - you can completely remove the screw and nut. It just adjusts the play by pushing on the end of the cross shaft and roller - nothing can move inside when it's out. It's worth checking the bushes in the cross shaft housing. If there is any movement here you won't ever adjust the box properly. They are easily replaced but you have tp romove the box to do it.

Thanks for that BJ1. Everything else seemed pretty good and the steering isn't too bad. Will check again though.
