 I'm having real problems removing the nut holding the fan to the alternator at the back of the engine, I think the Hulk must of tightened it!
Has anyone got any ideas bar removing the engine please?
Already used WD40, ratchet, longer ratchet and lots of swearing

Cheers.

Have you dropped the engine down to give better access ie removed the 3 moustache bar bolts and lowered it on a jack whilst still connected to the gearbox?
It was the way I was going to tackle the job if and when my alt gives up

I watched a video of a guy doing it on a beetle without removing the engine although he did have a little more access

*edit* here is a link to the vid http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/video.php?do=viewdetails&videoid=57" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; :D

Take the alternator out with fan attached and get a windy gun on it. Worked for me :)

If you undo the fan housing, disconnect the thermostat you should be able to lift the fan housing to give enough clearance to remove it.

Yeah Stu I watched that two part video with the orange beetle, I did it like that 67 but I've removed carb, fuel pump, unbolted alt and pedestal, only thing holding it in is the fan bolted on alt and pedestal not clearing p heat pipes, one bolt is holding back an easy job, left it to soak in WD over night but its just done up really tight not rusted. :(

You can get it out with the fan attached by lifting the housing. Its tight but it does fit, done it a few times

I'll have a crack at it when the weather improves, if not I'll have a couple of more goes undoing that nut or cut the pedestal off that'll give me clearance to take it out
Got another one to put in anyway

Whs ^ even easier if you have dual carbs and no thermostat to disconnect.

Got mine out still attached, then used a nut runner to remove it.i think the only thing stopping the fan housing was the thermostat mine was not connected so eased it up a little and bingo out it came

Update, I got it out :D

But the fans still on, the bolt won't shift at all, it's definitely not torqued to 40lb

What's a nut runner? god knows how I'll get it off, had it in a vice now with a breaker bar, it's like a bad joke

I spent a couple of hours trying to get it off. Went to the garage round the corner and 10 seconds later it was off with a windy gun :) got a friendly local garage or a neighbour with a compressor?

I replace my pedestal studs with bolts now it's a piece of piss to remove and I don't have to do owt with the thermostat

Good idea replacing the studs with bolts 8)

I'll take it to my mates garage tomorrow hopefully he can get it off for me.
