Removing rust from gutters... is this OK?

Hi all,

Been prodding around in the gutters of my van... I knew there was a bit of grot already. Its all surface rust except for 1 hole through the gutter, which I'll weld up. I've been attacking it with a couple of wire brush drill attachments.

I was thinking, to stop the rot.

Firstly, a good soaking with POR15 metal acid etch primer stuff

then, a layer or two of Zinc primer to kill any rot left.

Then, a layer or two of POR15 to seal it all up.

Then, possibly a bit of seam sealer on any areas which are a bit raised or depressed to smooth it all out a bit. Would Filler primer be better for this?

Then, a few layers of normal primer

Then a few layers of white paint.

Bearing in mind I'll be using paint brushes for the zinc and POR15, and rattlecans for the primer/filler primer/white paint, does this sound OK for killing any rot left in there?

Any advice much welcomed :)

I have used the same wire wheel prep method in the past, but a lot less paint and never had an issue. I have always used a wire wheel to get to as much bare metal as possible then followed up with a rattle can of Endrust. After that dried I used regular primer and paint. Never had the rot come back, so I would imagine your method is much better. No worries.
 
Must admit re-reading it there Jim, looks like you never want that cancer back...

Just go for a nice clean finnish free from areas where the **** will pool and regularly clean in the gutters you'll be fine...
 
If you use too much paint it might crack out. I would use a cure rust type of thing, etch primer, then use what you have to prep for paint, ie: high build primer & skim of filler over pitted or repaired bits. Then paint with 2k if you can.
 
have done simlar with wire wheel>etch>prime>barcoat>lots of topcoat

I've found the metal edges are the place where there are a couple of stains coming through a few years down the line

what I think is happening its easy to get really thick coats in the gutter, it happens without trying, more difficult is the sharp corners on the gutter edge, gravity and paint surface tension pulls the paint and makes it very thin at these points, and the sharp edges get rubbed harder when cleaning.

VWnutt, glad you've done similar with no problems. I'd imagine you have a kinder climate where you are? My bus lives outside most of the year now :(


Araon, there is no way this thing is gonna rust while I own it! I'm getting more attached to it now so its probably a "keeper".

I've never sold a car yet :lol:

Pete and ronmidg, you've both given me a few things to consider. I'll see what I can do, but paint isn't something I've done much with yet :) - Only 1 way to learn :D

Your system for stopping rust is exactly what I use! I have seen cab floors done this way 7 years ago with no sign of rust at all. On the outside POR 15 does not lift or peel if it's put on properly - the way you do it in fact :) I use the same system for treating surface rust around window frames - but then you don't have that problem do you? :lol:
