I’m going to make a pair of Devon buddy seats using an original I bought recently as a template.

Can anyone tell me the correct stain / varnish colour I should be using to finish the units off (using an white oak veneer)
And
If I put on black doors, are they a plain finish, gloss or matt, and do they have a ‘grain’ in them like the lighter one seems to have,
And
can you buy the original style door handles anywhere.

?????

Im not sure about the stain/varnish, it is a satin finish, if you want them both to match, i would get them matched at a paint shop or something as they will darken alot over 30+ years than to what the original stain colour was.

i dont understand what you mean about the black doors? are you replacing the white melamine with black? i was able to get an exact match from a kitchen fitter for the original white doors.

ive been searching for 4 years for the handles and never seen them, if you come across some new/repro let me know :D . I have two full sets of interior, but i might go down this route too as i've found a good cabinet maker who is cheap to pay and should be able to sell both sets. to fund it once the templates are made. Please keep us informed of how you got on. lots of pictures too :)

sorry, i might not have explained myself properly
I'm going to get 2 new ones made, so the original will be surplus after all measurements are taken, and the colours will then match.
I thought (assumed) the cupboard doors were either white or black originally, if not, so much for 'Reproducing that original look' it might be splitty interiors i've seem them. nevermind.

Looks like I'll be helping you with the eternal search for handles, nothings easy these days.

 true.

the earlybay devon units were japanese oak veneer with fronts made from white melamine as in your picture) with aluminium trim, later bays were a wheaten/brown colour with a dark brown plastic trim and AFAIK everything was made in chip board.

this is how the colour would have look originally... japanese oak with a clear urethane coat.

Just a though, check out some charity shops, you may find them? Or Ebay as above. Cant find a close up picture to tell for sure, but my parents had this stuff when i was young....

Cheers!

Alistair

you can buy brand new devon edging (aluminium with black insert) from coolair to finish off the edging if you need to.

Damn, I wish I knew that a fortnight ago - The closest match I could find as a laminate was a light Walnut. I'm using it on my mix and match Westy/Devon interior...........

Cheers, i've already bought some trim from them when i was at volksworld. (it's slowly coming together ;) )
