Reverse light for MOT??

Do you need a reverse light on a 71 bay to pass an MOT?

Sunvisors?
Door opening mech

Just trying to work out what I need to fit as I've gone and booked it , kinda think it may fail but should be minor stuff now and I should be able to fix quite easliy....Hopefully..
 
I don't believe so mate, but i'd having them working if their fitted ;)
 
Ah cheers none fitted so will chnace that hopefully not required although imagine it'd be handy so will have to get soemthing hooked up longer term.

Imagine sunvisors are req? Trying to clean mine up to fit short term but will have to get new ones, cleaning off 38 yrs of crud ain't easy thinking about a mild bleach solution may whiten it or may nacker it vinykl cleaner ain't budging all the crud. Guess yellow wcolouration is sun bleach...
 
Reverse lights don't need to be fitted.Even if they are fitted they don't have to work.I don't think you even need a sunvisor fitted,but if it is fitted it has to be able to be stowed up.For the door mechanism,you don't say whats wrong with it,but I can tell you that both front doors need to be able to be opened from inside and outside and when shut they should be secure.
 
reverse lights arent part of mot so dont even need them on a new car :mrgreen:
 
My reverse light is wired to a switch which i manually turn on when reversing (sometimes :oops: and then leave on :lol: )
 
Years ago I rescued a late bay from the scrappy and got it through an MOT with no probs. I had put a decent set of light rear lenses on which incorporated a reverse light segment, but put them on light clusters which didn't have the reverse circuit. I drove it for about a year until the next MOT. I had to use a different garage, and the tester failed the van because (amongst other things) the reversing lights weren't working. He said that if they were fitted, they had to work. I argued the toss, but lost. I went home, put black tape over the white bit of the lens, and he passed it...... :roll:

Well, at least you have the comfort of knowing that you were right and he was completely wrong.

MoT testers who don't know the rules really wind me up. In a similar situation to yours, I had one fail a 1970 Triumph once because it didn't have any wing mirrors. I argued that it only needed to had the internal rear view mirror but then the tester got all arsey. Apparently nothing wound him up more that the general public thinking they knew the rules better than he did - it was a no win situation!
 
There is a hell of a lot of information to remember for the mot test,so it is understandable to get it slightly wrong.When I first passed the Mot testers test I looked in the manual if I wasn't sure or if I needed the correct wording,ie not just putting suspension fu***d.But since computerisation it will eliminate a lot of the problems because if it isn't a fail in the manual the computer won't list it and the tester can't fail it.

But the testers can still manually input/type specific fail points, if they do not come up on the computer pre-typed, can they not?

You are absolutely right, and I should have phrased things better. Perhaps ‘I can’t stand MoT inspectors who refuse to check the book when there’s a query on their decisions’ would have been more accurate.

I took my cars to a DoT centre for a few years and the chap there, although very experienced, was never afraid to check the regulations if need be.

The garage where I was am MOT tester went bankrupt so I was redundent just before computerisation came in and since then I've been self employed so don't do MOT's myself anymore.But I thought you could manually enter advisories but not failures.I'm not 100% sure though.

I think Air Cooled Rookie you are right,some MOT testers are unwilling to admit they are/where wrong to fail a car.The UK mot standard isn't really great at all in my opinion,but will probably stop a lot of dodgy motors passing the test to be fair.It' certainly a topic of debate anyway.

Now you've said that, I've only ever seen it done for advisories... I've not had an MOT fail in 3 years now ;)
 
Thanks for all the advice up early to finnish off a few bits get her ready and if it fails challenge!!
No rev light fitted so should be OK winders handles catches on doors all fitted, no cards yet surely not a fail.

Well wish me luck it's been a few years since the last one.....

Headlight aim was out and got sorted there and then.
A loose earth on the rear lights giving a few mixed signals.
Last but not least a sticking rear wheel cylinder which was fine until the moment MOT man jumped in to move her and stuck, or could be a handbrake cable?

Could have been worse...
 
Thats not too bad dude.Should be straight forward to sort out. It could be a brake cylinder stuck,brake hose collapsed or handbrake cable seized or adjusted too tight.If you do adjust them too tight they tend to stick when you go over uneven surfaces,did it stick going over the brake roller machine?
 
Yeah sorted most of it already and got new brake cylinders through today reckon thats the problem. Have bought a pair for the rear as reckon I may as well do both at the same time?

You need an illuminated switch, they will get you for showing a white light to the rear.
