Evenin' all,

Does anybody have any hints and tips for putting these windows in?

I think the newness of the seal is making things a little difficult as I can't seem to push the frame all the way home against the bus.

These are my first windows to go back in after the respray and here's me thinking it would be a nice straight forward job.

Cheers

Re-fitting the side windows is an absolute pig the seals are extremely tight, tight to the extent that you wouldn't possibly think they would go in.
I found that using a good lubricant (out of date E45 cream lol  ) and a large chunk of 3x3 fence post as a thumping tool to force the windows back in was the only way. I found it best to start at one of the bottom corners and pop inside every now and again to flip the rubber seal over the window flange with a blunt screwdriver followed by more thumping to drive the seal in, i could not get the rope in seal method to work :( .I reckon it took me at least 3-4 hours just to fit one complete side window assembly and quarter light. I hope you have more luck the me

On the plus side if you are glazing the whole van, the front screen is really easy to fit and you can use a piece of rope on that one. I reckon it took less than 45 mins to fit and that was my first one. Hopefully this will help average things out

plan on a weekend to fit a few 3/4 glass and opening 1/4s, the new rubbers are just too big. also your fingers are gonna feel it the next day,
use lube, i normally use cavity wax, but not too much on the glass as you end up slipping.
good luck

Try putting the seal in some hot water first (makes it more supple).

Washing up liquid makes a good lube (as long as you keep it wet)

PS. Anyone on here work for autoglass etc?? Any tips?

Seriously consider using the services of a professional - the bodyshop where I took my bus for some panel work even do this. I once had a side rear window fitted for 'tea money' (a tenner) by my local guys. after spending more time than I care to tell trying it myself- Best money ever spent.

My analogy is with fitting carpets in the house - cheap enough that you really would want to do it yourself and risk messing up.

Just my four penneth.

Strongy offered his services a while back (being a auto glass installer)I suspect I'll be fitting the windscreen and driving a drafty bus up to his place....

its about time i had a drive over to your place araon.
its hard to give advice on something like this over the internet,i had a chap come in the other day he had spent hours trying to get 1 piece in,and i reglazed the whole bus in less than 1 hour.just read that back to myself, how cocky does that sound

i would use water as a lube(as it dosent need cleaning of when the glass is in)ive never used a fence post  ,but if its tight you will need a lot of force so what ever works really.the rest can all be done with string, the best way i find to get these in is to string the rubber up starting half way up the side and adding a loop half way up the other side then spay the apature, give it a good smack in(as far as it will go,if the rubber wont lip then its not in far enougth) then get some one to keep presure on the glass while you pull the string,if it stops liping give it a good smack  when i did my training 13 years ago one of the first tips i was told was, ones its part lipped dont hit where it isent lipped(hit behined the un lipped  )oh and if ya scared of braking it you will never get it in

probably not much use to you as you havent got the image in your head that i have in mine.

Thanks for all that fellas. The only tools I have are angle grinder, big hammer and a lump of 3x2, sounds like they all might come in handy for this 'delicate' glazing job. Round two will commence on Friday when I can see what I'm doin', watch this space :)

A bit of success this weekend with these blummin' windows :D

or so I thought, when I came to put the 3/4 window in I realised that I've knackered it with sparks off the grinder melting their way into the surface. I've checked all of my other glass and yes, each and every piece has got the complexion of spotty teenager, bollox!!!! :x

So, who's best for glass??? Would prefer good, thick, old stuff as opposed to the thin new stuff although a weight saving might not be a bad idea :)

Cheers

Ian
