Been told my 1600 single port needs a rebuild, but thinking of swapping for a recon twinport instead. Whet are the benefits of a twin over single, and what else will i need to change and what will it cost me? Any info/ guideance appreciated.

Might not be everything but off the top of my head.

Fan shroud (single ports don't have dog house tin I think?)
If fan shroud then:
Oil cooler, bell house tin, fan

Inlet manifold
Cylinder head tins

Probably other stuff too :)

If you do make the swap could and assuming it's because the heads are toast could I possible buy a couple of inlet manifold studs from you.
Or could swap for the dog house tin you will need for the twin port swap

Thanks for info 67Westy, I will start pricing things up.
Sam - i will message you if i do have spare studs, it may be a bit of a wait though as the guy i was thinking of getting a recon from has just told me it will be a minimum of 7 weeks.

Ian at Love Purple can do a 1600 TP recon with 12 months warranty for £500 quid.
Good price, but looking at a 2 month-ish wait. Whats the general experience with him ?
Anyone know of any alternatives in Essex area can maybe do same sort of thing quicker?

if your keeping things stock and not planning on twin carbs etc down the line then I'd stick with singleport and convert to doghouse cooler whilst rebuilding it

single ports have more torque and they usually hold up better than dual. you can run a doghouse on a single port you either have to convert the head tin over and get the kit to convert the cooler over or if it's all ready a doghouse style cooler set up just change out the headtin. if you like working on your bus all the time then you can put dual carbs on it. you can get kits in either dual or single port.

Why do people say the single port has more torque? The smaller ports will have high air velocity at low revs but does it really give more torque? Can anyone show me a graph or official reference?
If you ever plan to do anything with the engine then go Dual ports as they flow much better out the box.
If you just want to putter about in an all original bus then go SP with a doghouse set-up.

Thanks for all the advice and comments guys. I have gone for an exchange deal, swapping my old SP lump for a recon 1600 TP. Should be ready to collect end of May. Looks like I have sourced some of the tinware I need (doghouse fan shroud and the head tins) but still on the lookout for good condition original Front Plate, Oil Cooler Exhaust Duct, Oil Cooler Exhaust Tin, Oil Cooler and Fan. Please let me know if you have any of these. Will put a post in 'for sale and wanted' along with some other bits I am on the lookout for shortly.

The recon engine is not coming from Ian/LovePurple after all as he had too long a wait. Using someone else

I have an oil cooler scoop you can have for the cost of postage it will need blasting and powder coating or I have scoop and cool cover (repro) that you can have for £15 posted.

I watched an old "Wheeler Dealers" last night where they converted a panel van from SP to DP and gave a few details on what was needed and how it
fits together...

The whole episode is on-line if you know how to download stuff :msn4: - a bit of it is here:

Was that the orange one Matt, watched that already a while back if so, I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to air-cooled, but got a guy who knows a lot more than me helping with the engine swap, so I am basically just trying to find the parts I am told to look for and will probably be just passing him spanners and making the tea !! :D

Thanks for offer Sam, may way take you up on one of those, just seeing what is out there and waiting for my VW Resto friend to see what he has tucked away in his storage

single ports don't crack as bad as dual port heads they only make a few more hp than a single anyways if they are just stock. there are threads on the samba about the the torque and hp difference between the two also just look at the manuals for each of the years it will show you. it's really not that much. for my panel i'm going to try and build a 1776 sp motor with a doghouse and single carb jetted out. very reliable motor.

That is for a stock 1600. I assume you will be putting in a longer duration, higher lift cam at the same time?
Just by upping the capacity you will need to flow greater than 10% more air, adding a bigger cam will increase it further. Your choice, but I would be looking for a decent set of dual port heads myself.
