So I fitted a Smartcom relay between my batteries according to the instructions, I fitted a voltmeter to the leisure battery too just to see how much voltage was in that battery when running stuff in the van. BUT the Smartcom never seemed to switch over to charging the leisure battery, so I adjusted it with success and the output goes to 13.8 as the charge goes through, yippeee! This is also reflected on the voltmeter too, excellent!

The problem now comes starting, which is VERY laboured. I am also concerned the smartcom won't switch back and isolate the two batteries....and so draining the main battery when the load should only be draining the leisure battery.....

Any ideas?

Sounds like thats whats happening :? . I've always used a standard 40amp relay with my split charges and never had any probs, are things getting too complicated for their own good?
