After 6 years trouble free driving I'm getting probs with my Solex carb 30 pict 1, fitted to a single port 1600 engine.
At weekend I found the engine struggling to pull a certain rev range ie low revs in all gears, when I got past low revs in each gear the engine ran fine, eventually Old Poe conked out on my girlfriends parents drive & won't start.
Checked points, spark etc - the plugs are dry, fuel pump is pumping so me thinks blockage in jets.
Checked this baby which clicks like a good un

The air jet is unblocked but the main jet which is 0120. is like this

As it's low revs probs would this be the pilot jet? is that the pilot jet on the fuel cut out solenoid? could it be blocked?
Has anyone any ideas where I can get a new main jet c/w housing as the thread is snapped inside (not by me :( )
& is proving difficult to remove..
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks Andy

I'm a bit confused according to all internet drawings on the 30 pict 1 carb as below

the pilot jet should be under the idling cut off solenoid, however I have no pilot jet under there :?

My wifes' bug runs the same carb and I'm pretty sure there's a spare at home. If you can wait til later I'll take a look for you...

;)

Would you like to sell said spare Carb :)

Hi Andy,
I've taken a look at the carb - the main jet is a 0.0125 (compared to your 0.02?) but the carb was originally fitted to a SP1300 so this could be the reason - the main jet carrier is fine if you want to give it a try.

The carb has seen better days and I can't vouch for the spindles etc - but you're welcome to any parts you might need; I also have a tidy collection of gaskets, needle valves etc if you need anything.

On the subject of your solenoid... these are definitely worth checking out. I rebuilt my carb a few months ago and couldn't get it idle at all despite having the spindle reamed and re-bushed and a complete strip down and rebuild. The mauals all say that the solenoid should 'click' when you turn the ignition on - mine did this despite being faulty!! I swapped for another solenoid and hey-presto it was fine afterwards. You need to remove the brass part (pilot jet) that goes inside the carb and thoroughly clean that too - make sure you blow it through with some compressed air or similar.

I've added a few pics below - let me know if any parts might be of use to you...

How do I make the mixture more richer? by screwing the side screw in or out & adjusting idle screw to suit
or will it need a bigger main jet?

So it's been running fine for 6 years and you are messing with the jet sizes? That makes no sense at all. It's more likely that you have a fuel supply problem. Have you turned over the engine with the pump outlet in a jar? Should get lots of flow. Have you checked the accellerator pump? Is there fuel in the float chamber? Is the feed drilling to the main jet clear? You richen the mixture by screwing the needle valve outwards.

HHHmmmm, if you refer to my original post & look at the second picture you'll see the main jet is broken.
The new jet is marginally smaller hence asking about how to richen the mixture.
The fuel pump is pumping well,
The accelerator pump is pumping well (new carb kit fitted)
Bags of fuel in the float chamber.
Feed to the main jet is clear (this was checked with compressed air when carb kit was fitted)

I was under the impression (maybe I'm wrong) that the screw on the side controls the air into the system so if you screw the screw in it slows down air hence making the mixture richer? Your supposed to set this turning in until engine revs drop then screw out until it speeds up again.
What I was thinking is - If I screw in until revs drop (less air) can I speed up the revs with the idle screw on the front of the carb? Making the mixture richer..

From what your saying it's the other way round?????

Thanks Andy
