For those running a solex 34 with 009 and suffering flat spots this may prove a little interesting reading....
found it whilst doing a little research....

though personally I think i'd have opted to cut a new butterfly, interesting to see if it really does cure the 009 problems?

It would be interesting to see which set up is the best performing on a straight and up hills and also which is best on petrol.

Maybe it would be worth experimenting with blocking the hole on the solex 34 and using a vac dizzy together? Maybe that would release a few more horses or maybe it would run too rich on idle to be worth it?

Using the correct vac advance distributor will always result in better MPG, due to the nature of the advance mechanism.

Having run a 009, then switched to a standard mech/vac distributor, the vac/mech one is so much better.

So much so, I'm running one with my twin carb setup on my beetle. The power and lack of flat spots AND the extra MPG are much better. With no notable change in power.

Bin the 009s unless you're running a set of BIG carbs and don't care about fuel economy ;)

Oh, and also... that's not a solex 34, that's a Brosol 34 solex replica. Total different kettle of fish. The Brosol "stock" carbs will ALWAYS be crap. In my experience they last under 2000 miles before the carbs need replacing again, and they don't provide the right mixture.
My "Kadrons" (twin 40s) are Brosol made and seem better quality, however. I now get double the MPG my single brosol 31 pict carb got (on my bug) too.

...Sorry, I just REALLY dislike 009s...

To modify an orginal German Solex 34 to work with an 009 is way wrong. To purchase an aftermarket Solex 34 and modifying that is not quite that bad, depending on which country produced it. Using an aftermarket 009 should not be done at all. Period. The advance curve is totally unpredictable, even worse if they're made in China. Why not use the dizzy that matches the carb in the first place??? If you're going to use any type of centrifical advance only dizzy, use an original Bosch 010 or 019. See Glenn on Samba for those needs. If you need an original German Solex 34 rebuilt, see Kiefernet on Samba. Lots of threads and topics on this on Samba. As far as the dual Kadron 40's go, this is what's in my Bus which is a 1776. I use one of Glenn's original 019 Bosch dizzy's. Far superior to the 009 that was on it. Proper dizzy would be a suitable SVDA with the left carb ported for vacuum. Haven't done that, no need to with the 019. Runs like a champ, flat spot virtually eliminated with the 019.
