Hi

After being wripped off by two places now I am trying to get my bus up and running myself. However I have limited knowledge of mechanics but am keen to understand more.

My bus starts and ticks over okay, but after a while was stalling so took a look at the auto choke and adjusted this and will now run fine on tick over.

However, when I open up the throttle it just cuts out, so I am guessing its too much fuel or not enough fuel?! Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have removed both jets and they look clean?

Any help would be appreciated, or if there was someone that could recommend a geniune decent person that could come and tune up for me that would be great, I am just outside Ipswich, Suffolk. At the moment I am unable to drive it anywhere as just stalls when you open up and try to drive away!

I know there are decent people out there, I just seem to stumble across the bad guys :-(

Thank you.

Hi Jon, thank you for your reply, is that same as fuel pump?

I was wondering that just last night? Is there also a filter in the pump? Can this be tested somehow?

There's very rarely a filter in the pump. The old ones had a screen that can be cleaned out but that's not really true any more.

Whereabouts are you? There are knowledgeable folk all over the place that'd take you through all this business :)

Edit- apologies, ipswitch. No good for me at least...

Try going through this lot.

Things to note-

Points gap is actually pretty tricky to get spot on. I use a dwell meter, which is really damn accurate and runs between 10-20 quid on ebay.

Carburettor adjustment in this manual is backwards- it's out for rich, in for lean. Don't worry that it's for a 34 pict-3, they're very similar as long as you're not taking them apart.

Carburettor adjustments are always done AFTER everything else- points/timing/plugs what have you are set to numbers, carbs are set to results. You'll never get a well set carb if there's a fault with the rest of this stuff.

CO meters are great for carb adjustment- rather than doing it by ear, you do it to a figure. You can get a gunson for abour £40 second hand and do it all yourself.

Thank you for taking the time Happystamps, would be good to sort it myself as enjoy learning just be good if I can find someone more local to take the time to show me the ropes! as always easier learning on the job so to speak than via a book.

But will have a read up as have not looked at points, plugs etc etc as yet!

But have tweaked the mixture and idle screws but not much seems to happen!

Thanks again

James

That's often the case if there's something else going on... Often air leaks will render your carb adjustments ineffective, so when you're going through the list (valve gaps, points dwell, timing, spark plug gaps) have a look around for loose carbs or nuts on inlet manifolds, cracked manifold boots, blown carburettor gaskets or core plugs, missing vacuum signal hoses and unblocked ports on the carb.
