hi people iv had the bus engine running today after the piston and barrel replacement and its running very hot that hot that the dipstick can hardly be touched?. Also seems to be down on power? Does anyone have any ideas of what i can check/do to try and sort it out iv since found out that its a 1600 ad engine which originally came from a beetle. The pistons and barrels that have been fitted are 1641. Do i need to change the amount of fuel as in sure it was running lean before the engine work was done any help or advice would be great. Thanks John

There is your answer....

If its LEAN it will run HOT :?

I would suggest just going through the BASIC'S like the Haynes manual says......
- Check fuel supply
- Spark/plugs/timing
- Tappet adjustment
- Oil level/grade/etc
- Tinware/sparkplug boots!

A little known fact but a cylinder will run 40deg's HOTTER if you don't have the little boot around the base of the sparkplug leads fitted correctly & sealing!!!

If that is true, and I don`t doubt you for a second, I think there will be a lot of peeps checking their plug leads today at some point ,,,, like me  How did you come by this information ? And what is it based on ? I think I need to do a bit of reading

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Or is it one of those things that every other person knows ? Just not me

I was gonna say "How many people are NOT running them!?"

The information came from MATT KEENE (volksworld tech guy!)
He was running an engine up on the dyno and noticed the seal wasn't fitted correctly..... He checked them temps and YES it was 40degs HOTTER!!!!!

One of those silly small details that make a MASSIVE difference!!! :)

WOW,, I know just about everybody uses them including me but I still don`t get it, and you`re right in that it`s a mahooooosive difference.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, Anyone shed any light on ` ` Why ` ` interesting

Well, the holes are rather large without the rubber boots....

Can't say I ever considered them a "minor detail" though

i find 40°C hotter rather difficult to believe, can we have some factual evidence here instead of speculation about what some guy from a magazine reckons?

can you please post a link to the aforementioned thread he posted with all the details etc?

i hadn't heard of this matt , but i never was a "scene" follower, left cornwall in 1978 and haven't bought a volksworld magazine in at least 15 years.

a short google tells me he does seem to know what he's doin' building extreme injins.

but i still find the 40° hotter pretty far fetched for a street engine and would be interested to read exactly under what circumstances and conditions he came to these findings.

thanks. ;)

Lol @ 40degrees increase in temp!

There is a section here that is worth a read

http://www.type2.com/library/cooling/coolsami.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A listmember found that missing the seals for the spark plug holes increased oil temp by 10-15 F

F not degrees!
