Im planning on taking my spare out of the bus for more sleeping space and would like to put it on the integral roof rack on my westy.
Has anyone done this? Is the rack strong enough? How would you secure it - with some sort of bracket?

Thanks

I'm sure just use a ratchet tie tow strap would do? Of how about this for a idea - go to a caravan breakers and get one of those carrages that hold the spare wheel underneath a caravan, some measurements, and you may have room underneath the campers chassis maybe to fit? - see if there is space with your spare under the bus to see first.

I put my spare on the r/rack when I go camping as getting it out of the spare wheel well allows me to have a wider bed.
Ive found that the roof bars do tend to sag with the weight, so I use some copper pipe lagging that stops the bars from vibrating on the roof as well as stopping the sagging.A length of chain and a couple of small padlocks along with some bungees to hold the spare down.

I decided when i got the van that I wanted the spare on the roof. I've got a full width cusion custom made in the rear now so much better for sleeping. I also use the spare wheel whole for spare parts which works really well.

I have a 5 bow roof rack that the wheel goes on and just 2 x bunge cords over the top, it's never moved an inch. The tyre seems to stick it nice and tight. Havent spotted any bending of the roof rack at all yet.

Excellent - thats what I wanted to hear! That was an easy one answered.

Cheers fellas!
